Nedra Lee Eckroth, 84, Mandan, died April 26, 2016, at Sanford Health, Bismarck. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 30, at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with Monsignor Chad Gion as celebrant. Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
Visitation will be held today from 4 to 8 p.m. at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a parish vigil at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
Nedra Lee was born Dec. 20, 1931, to Roger and Rosalie (Fagen) Neuenschwander in Fessenden. She attended school in Fessenden and graduated from Fessenden High School in 1949. Nedra then went on to attend Minot State, receiving her teaching certification. She taught in rural schools for two years then went to Chaseley, where she taught and was also the basketball coach. She met the love of her life, Henry “Buck” Eckroth, in Fessenden, where they were lifeguards together. They married on Aug. 19, 1953, in Fessenden. After they married they lived in Mott; Greybull, Wyo.; Fort Lewis, Wash. (as Buck was called to active duty) and Bismarck, where Buck coached and taught. Nedra remained a stay-at-home mother to their five children and attended Bismarck State College studying the juvenile justice system. She went to work at the Heartview Foundation. While there, positions included volunteer coordinator, librarian, education coordinator and adolescent outreach coordinator.
One of Nedra’s proudest accomplishments was achieving over 40 years of sobriety through an active involvement with AA. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Nedra will be deeply missed by her children, Tom (Jan) Eckroth, Bismarck, Kim (Phil) Hanson, Stillwater, Minn., Karen (Randy) Huyck, Anoka, Minn., Lora (Robert) Baker, Mandan, and Mike (Lisa) Eckroth, Edina, Minn.; 11 grandchildren, Jennifer, Chris, Sara, Daniel, Nathan, Jessica, Lisa, Nick, Taylor, Isaac and Annika; four great-grandchildren, Hunter, Cole, Lillian and Evan; a brother, Roger Neuenschwander, Boise, Idaho; and her sisters-in-law, Janice Neuenschwander, Bismarck, and Virginia (Bill) Boehm, Mandan.
Nedra was preceded in death by her husband and best friend, Buck, in 2010; her parents; a grandson, David (Brave Dave); and her brothers, Joe and Dan Neuenschwander.
