Dorothy I. 'Dot' Schumacher, age 80, went to her heavenly home to be united with her husband Monday, March 26, 2012 at The Laurels of Massillon following a long illness. She was born Oct. 3, 1931 in Tioga Center, N.Y., the daughter of the late George W. and Carrie (Coons) Herrala. Prior to moving to Massillon in 1955, she was a hair dresser in New York. Dorothy was a devoted member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Mr. and Mrs. Club, Y-Wives, and Bud and Blossoms Garden Club. She enjoyed creating handmade crafts, spending time in her garden, and blessing others with her cooking and baking talents.
Dorothy loved her family and is survived by her three children; daughter, Theresa Custer of Canton, and two sons, Philip M. (Cheryl) Schumacher of North Canton, and Stephen C. (Lori) Schumacher of Hoover, Alabama; devoted grandma to Abigail, Emily, and Victoria Custer, Katlyn, Sari, and Seth Schumacher. Also survived by her brother and sister, Lacey L. (Kay) Herrala of Barton, N.Y. and Shirley L. Snyder of Owego, N.Y. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William J. Schumacher, with whom they celebrated 56 years of marriage; and infant daughter, Linda Marie.
Visitation will be held Friday, March 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Heitger Funeral Home - Massillon Chapel, 639 First St NE. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 31, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Edward Gretchko celebrant. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
