Dr. G.O. Hammersley, one of our best known citizens and a practicing physician here since 1918, died suddenly in his office in the Exchange building this morning about 9:30 o'clock, death being due to an affection of the heart from which he has suffered more or less in recent years. Specifically, he has had an enlarged condition of the right side of the heart for a number of years and his health has been somewhat precarious, though up to the time of this stroke so far as can be ascertained, he had been feeling as well as usual.
The doctor was engaged in a consultation with a patient at the time, a woman whose name we have been unable to ascertain, when he suddenly collapsed, with a low moan. It so happened that Perry Cooperman, who had entered the building to consult Dr. Baker, a dentist with offices farther up the corridor, was passing the doorway, and when he glanced in and saw Dr. Hammersley's condition he made a hasty examination and then called Dr. Baker. The two immediately secured the services of other physicians, Drs. Denton Phipps and Pinion, and laid the sufferer upon a couch, but by the time of the arrival of the doctors aid was of no avail for life was practically extinct. As this is written the body of Dr. Hammersley is being prepared for burial at the home on Carleton avenue, but arrangements as to the funeral have not as yet been perfected.
Dr. Hammersley was aged probably 55 to 58 years and was a native Indianan, having been born and reared at Lagoda, Ind., a short distance from Dr. Phipps' old home. He came to this city in the fall of 1918 from Campbell, Mo., where he had practiced his profession for many years, and has been a citizen here since. Shortly after he came here he was married to Miss Ollie Powell and they have resided in the property of the latter on Carleton avenue since that time.
Dr. Hammersley was an officer in the reserve corps of the U.S. Army, usually attending each year a training camp in Iowa and had seen considerable military service first and last. He was reputed an excellent physician and had a very good practice. He was a public spirited man and a good citizen, who will be much missed in the community and his sudden summons was a severe shock to his wife and other relatives, none of whom are located nearer here than his former home at Campbell.
