EDWARD AND ADELINE NEUHARTH Edward Neuharth family Edward is the oldest child of Jacob Neuharth, who was born in the Menno area February 10, 1884, died April 5, 1964 and Fredrica Aman, born in Eureka January 14, 1887, died June 22, 1938, daughter of Henry Aman, Sr. Edward was born October 30, 1906, attended school and lived on a farm with his parents seven miles northeast of Eureka. He has seven brothers and sisters: Emil; Fred (deceased); Anna, Mrs. John Weishaar; Bertha Krause, Mrs. Alvin Hauck; Ruben; Henry; and Esther, Mrs. Julius Pfeiffer. Adeline is the oldest child of Henry Schnabel, Eureka, born April 24, 1887, died December 27, 1970 and Paulina Berreth, Eureka, born May 2, 1890, died June 12, 1970. Adeline was born June 21, 1908 and attended school 12 miles northeast of Eureka. She has seven brothers and sisters: Otto; Edna, Mrs. Fred Neuharth (deceased); Edmund; Alvin; Gerta, Mrs. Bert Rieger; Reinhold and Elmer (deceased). Edward and Adeline were married on November 11, 1928 at the Glucksthal Reformed Church. They purchased a farm ten miles northeast of Eureka where they lived for 27 years. In 1956 they retired, purchased a house at 504 10th Street, Eureka, where they lived with the exception of six months spent in Lodi, California during the winter months of 1967-68. An annual trek to Lodi was a strong consideration, however did not materialize as Edward passed away on June 8, 1968. Their descendents are: Amanda, born November 16, 1929, married Walter Orth of Artas. They live in Lodi, California. Grandchildren: Gordon and Dale; great grandchildren are Daniel and Kimberly. Alfred, born May 13, 1932, married Laverne Ottenbacher, Eureka, they live on the Eureka family farm. Grandchildren are Bradley, Tamara, Kenneth, Ronald, and Rhonda. Alton, born October 6, 1935, died May 6, 1936. Milbert, born May 14, 1939, married Jeanette Fischer-Martin of Eureka, they live in Eureka. Grandchildren: Natalie and Brenda; great grandchild is Natasha. Floyd, born October 12, 1943, died October 14, 1943. On April 14, 1971 Adeline and Gotthilf Mehlhaff were married at the Eureka Reformed Church. Gotthilf was born in the Eureka area November 14, 1900 and died March 27 1982. Adeline continues to live in Eureka, is a member of the Reformed Ladies Aid, enjoys embroidering, crocheting and reading.

He emigrated to America and arrived from Yankton in 1892 where he homesteaded northeast of Eureka. Besides farming he was a Director of N.W.G.F. Mutual Insurance Company and a McPherson County assessor for 12 years. He died August 8, 1935. Katherine Opp Neuharth was born July 26, 1874 in Gluecksthal, South Russia. She was a housewife until her death April 9, 1964. Richard is one of 16 children. Brothers and sisters are: Elizabeth, Daniel, John, George, Christ, Henry, Edward, Gust and Rose Fischer Stoebner, all deceased. Those living are: Martha Meidinger, Art, Elmer, Hulda Wittmayer and Lillian Roggenkamp. Richard attended elementary school at Eureka and Cayner's Electric in Chicago, Illinois. On May 23, 1942 he married Erva Schaeffer in Tacoma, Washington. Erva was born October 15, 1919 to John J. and Elizabeth (Schmeierer) Schaeffer at Ashley, North Dakota. John Schaeffer was born November 30, 1890 at Ashley, North Dakota. Elizabeth Schmierer was born December 1, 1893 at Strasburg, North Dakota. They moved to Eureka in 1923 where John operated a Blacksmith Shop for 65 years. He was a member of the Eureka City Council. He died September 20, 1969. Mrs. Schaeffer died November 22, 1950. Erva had one sister, Esther Bendert, Centerville, South Dakota now deceased. There were three brothers: Floyd, Eureka, deceased, John of Phoenix, Arizona, and Irwin of Eureka. After graduation from Eureka High School, Erva attended Northern State College in Aberdeen and Westmar College at Lamars, Iowa. She taught country school near Eureka for five years before becoming the Assistant Office Manager at the Eureka Community Hospital. She held this position for 15 years before her retirement in 1985. She is a member of the Eastern Star, Yelduz Auxiliary, V.F.W. Auxiliary, Hobby Extension Club, Eureka Hospital Auxiliary, Women of the Moose and the Elkettes. Richard served in World War II for four years as a Staff Sergeant in the U. S. Army and received an honorable discharge from the 90th Army Engineers. He and his wife returned to Eureka where he became manager of Eureka Equity Exchange Lumber Company. He held this position for 30 years when he retired in 1985. He is at present a Director of Eureka Theatrical Company, a McPherson County Commissioner, Past Eureka Hospital director and Past Councilman and Volunteer Fireman. He is a member of the Masonic Lodge, Yelduz Temple, V.FW. Post, American Legion, Eastern Star, Chamber of Commerce and the Elks. They are members of the Eureka Reformed Church. They have one daughter, Terry Sheila, born January 29, 1949 in Eureka. She married Kelly Klusmann of Bismarck, North Dakota on August 20, 1976 at the Eureka Reformed Church and resides in Dickinson, North Dakota. They have one child, Nathan Ross, born December 8, 1983. Terry graduated from Bismarck School of Nursing and Mary College of Bismarck and the University of Portland, Portland, Oregon. She is employed with North Dakota Health Department as a community health nurse consultant. Kelly received his B.S. ELMER AND EDNA NEUHARTH Being one half of a set of twins as well as the youngest in a family of sixteen children was a distinct beginning for Elmer Neuharth. He was born to John G. and Katherine (Opp) Neuharth March 1, 1919. John G. was born November, 1873 in Kassel, South Russia and died August 1935. Katherine was born in Gluckstal, South Russia July 26, 1874 and died April 10, 1964. Others in the family include his twin--Lillian Roggenkamp, Richard, Gustave, Hulda Wittmayer, Arthur, Theodore (died in infancy), Edward, Henry, Martha Meidinger, Rose (Fischer) Stoebner, Christ, Elizabeth (died in infancy), George, John, and Daniel. Elmer attended rural school and later served in the United States Army during World War II for four years. His overseas duty was in the European Theatre where he participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He married Edna Deahl December 15, 1942. Edna was born to Jacob and Lizzie (Heyd) Deahl April 15, 1925 near Long Lake, South Dakota. She has a brother, Edwin, living in Fargo, North Dakota and a sister, Leone Head, who lives in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Jacob was born in McPherson County September 1898 and died February 1937. Lizzie, born September 17, 1901 in McPherson County lives in Aberdeen. Elmer and Edna were owner-managers of Elmer's Place for many years. Having sold their business they are presently assistant manager and manager of the City Liquor Store. Elmer loves all spectator sports while Edna enjoys gardening and sewing. They are members of First Reformed Church. They have one daughter, Peggy, who is married to Paul Sexton, Jr. and lives in Aberdeen. Paul is employed by All American Freight Lines while Peggy is staff assistant for Indian Health Service. One grandson, Stacy R. Sexton completes the family.

JACOB D. OPP, JR. Jacob D. Opp, Jr., son of Jacob D. Opp, Sr. and Katharina Neuharth Opp, was born August 23, 1898 on a farm twelve and one-half miles northeast of Eureka and grew to manhood there. Frieda Pfeiffer, daughter of John Pfeiffer and Bertha Werre Pfeiffer, was born at Glenham, South Dakota on February 12, 1906, but moved with her parents to a farm eight miles northeast of Eureka while still very young; as a result, she and her future husband lived only five miles apart during their childhood and youth. Jacob and Frieda were married on November 8, 1923 and settled on a farm 13 miles northeast of Eureka. A year later they moved to another farm five miles southeast of Mound City. After two years they moved back to their first farm home and lived there until August 1952, when they sold out and moved into Eureka, where Jacob was employed by the Eureka Equity Exchange for eleven years. Ten children, all still living and in good health, came to bless the Opp home during the years. They are: Priscilla, born in 1925 and married to Alvin Schmitt of Long Lake, South Dakota. Alvin is employed at Safeguard Industries, Aberdeen, South Dakota. They have two children, Walter and Marilyn Gibbs and four grandchildren. Gilbert, born in 1926 and living at Eureka, South Dakota. Hilmer, born in 1928 and living at Albert Lea, Minnesota. He married Genevieve Retzer of Ashley, North Dakota and is employed at the Produce State Bank at Albert Lea, Minnesota. They have three sons, Steve, Brian and Charles and two grandchildren. Lorraine, born in 1931 and living at Eureka, South Dakota, married Eugene Meidinger of Eureka, South Dakota, now deceased. Lorraine is employed at Opp's Clothier and has two children, Terrance and Shirley Lund, and three granddaughters. Milo, born in 1933 and living at Eureka, South Dakota. Married Arlene Wenzel of Eureka, South Dakota. Milo owns Opp's Clothier in Eureka, South Dakota. Their children are Timothy, Michael, Sharie and Spencer, and they have three grandchildren. Lawrence, born in 1935 at Eureka, South Dakota is now living at Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He married Florence Aman of Hosmer, South Dakota. He is employed by the United States Federal Government, they have one daughter, Charlotte. Reinhold, born in 1938 at Eureka, South Dakota, is married to Diane LeBlanc from Fitchburg, Massachusetts and now lives at Pierz, Minnesota. He is Superintendent of Schools at Pierz, they have two children, Robyne and Rustin. Harry, born in 1941 at Eureka, South Dakota married Carol Gukeisen from Parkston, South Dakota. Harry is employed by the school system at Underwood, Minnesota. They have two daughters, Jodi and Kerri. Gloria, born in 1943 at Eureka, South Dakota, married Clyde Gilbert from Keystone, South Dakota. He is self-employed in Masonry Construction, they live in Rapid City, South Dakota and they have six children, Tena, Cory, Jennifer, Shaun, Jimmy and Justin. Geraldine, born in 1945 at Eureka, South Dakota, is married to Gary Schnabel of Eureka, South Dakota. Geraldine is employed at Area IV Senior Nutrition Project and Gary is employed at N & S Building Supply in Eureka, South Dakota. They have one daughter, Bobbi Jo. Frieda passed away on January 24, 1967 and Jacob on June 30, 1973 at Eureka, South Dakota.

AUGUST AND EMMA OPP August was one of ten children in the family of Jacob D. and Katharina (Neuharth) Opp, born northeast of Eureka on August 28, 1907. Jacob D. was born April 25, 1870 in South Russia and died April 10, 1961. August and Emma Opp Katharina was born December 23, 1874 in Menno and died April 2, 1966. August's brothers and sisters are: Katharina Hilgemann, Eureka, Elizabeth Hilgemann, deceased, Jacob, deceased, Christina Knapp, Eureka; Rosa Krein, deceased, Ada Mehlhaff, deceased; Martha Mettler, Rapid City; Erna Stroh, Eureka and Eugene, Aberdeen. Emma was born May 27, 1909 at Eureka to John and Maria (Gruneich) Ladner. John was born August 2, 1884 in Russia and died June 13, 1959. Maria was born July 11, 1889 at Ashley and died February 15, 1978. Emma has three brothers, Julius, Eureka; Barney, deceased; and Reinie, Lead. August and Emma were married February 28, 1929. They farmed northeast of Eureka until their retirement. After their move into Eureka, August worked for Coop Lumber Yard for a few years. August enjoyed playing baseball for many years, and he also enjoyed bowling. Emma had enjoyed gardening and homemaking. They both now reside at Sunrise Addition, Eureka. They are members of the Reformed Church. Three children were born to this couple. Clarence, born July 1, 1930, married Luceil Klipfel of Ashley in 1951. They have two children, Carmen, married to Mike Nelson, living at Fremont, Nebraska, and Keith, married to Audhild Tofle, living in Oslo, Norway. Carmen and Mike have two children, Jillion and Benjamin. Violet, born September 30, 1935, married Marvin Kramlich on October 18, 1970 and lives at Lehr, North Dakota. JOHN J. OPP John J. and Emelia Opp John J. Opp was born on July 5, 1901, the oldest son of 12 children of John D. Opp and Elizabeth (nee Neuharth), on the family farm 14 miles northeast of Eureka. Emelia Augustine (nee Lapp), the daughter of Johann Lapp and Augustine (nee Waesh), was born December 16, 1903, on the family farm southeast of Eureka. She was one of the younger of nine children. The couple was married on November 11, 1923 at the age of 22 and 20. A Lutheran minister, Rev. Schulz of Ashley performed the ceremony in the second story building in Eureka that was used for church services at the time. It was a double wedding ceremony, along with Henry G. Opp and Christine Nehlich. They all attended regular services and following the service both couples were married. The couple lived with his parents for about three weeks until the inside of their home was painted and completed. This farm was located about a half mile southwest of his parents farm. There they raised their family of three children and continued to live for the next 41 years. They started farming with six horses and seven cows. The first year they did not have a car and their only transportation was a one horse top buggy. They tell us it took a little better than an hour to make the trip of 13 miles to town. Their first child, a daughter, Wilma was born June 3, 1926 and their only son, Walter Henry, followed on August 20, 1930. Another daughter, Dorraine was born prematurely on December 28, 1931. Looking back there were many years of hard labor, drought, grasshoppers and illnesses, but through it all, they never lost faith in God. The family worshipped together regularly at the Glueckstahl Reformed Church during their life on the farm. During the dirty thirties we recall one summer with no crops here, Mr. Opp went threshing with a crew in North Dakota so that he could earn enough money for the winter's supply of coal and other bare necessities. The forties found times getting better with the exception of the war years. Son, Walter, served in the U. S. Marines. Their daughter, Wilma, was married to Orville Knapp on December 1, 1946 and they have two daughters, Marcia Kay and Sheila Ann, who was married to William Fred Hoffman on December 18, 1974. Daughter Dorraine was married to Earl Gruebele on July 25, 1954 and they have one daughter Karen May, employed at Fargo, North Dakota. Son, Walter, was united in marriage to Ora Raile on September 4, 1955 and their family includes four children, Greg married to Susan Pleinis, Gary employed at Java, South Dakota, Linda married to Kurt Lutz currently serving with the U. S. Air Force, and Stuart, a student at NDSU in Fargo, North Dakota. In September of 1964, because of health reasons, it became necessary to retire from active farming, and a farm auction was held, the buildings sold off the home place, and a new home was built in Eureka where they enjoyed their retirement years. Mr. Opp passed away at the Eureka Community Hospital on Tuesday, June 7, 1983, following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 11, 1983 at 10:30 a.m. at the Reformed Church of Eureka. He was 81 at the time of his passing. On June 28, 1983 Mrs. Opp entered the Lutheran Home where she continues to reside.

OTTO AND EMMA OPP Otto, born May 22, 1908, is one of seven sons of John J. and Elizabeth (Neuharth) Opp. John was born in South Russia February 3, 1879. Elizabeth was born at Menno, February 10, 1877 and came to this area in 1884. They farmed northeast of Eureka until their retirement. Emma was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Wolff of Greenway. She was born January 7, 1912 and died November 23, 1982. Her parents were born in South Russia and were farmers. Otto and Emma were married June 9, 1931. They were farming northeast of Eureka until they retired and moved into their newly built home in Eureka. Emma enjoyed sewing quilts while Otto continues to enjoy playing organ and watching baseball. They were the parents of eleven children. Doris, born November 2, 1933, was married to Fred Schumacher (deceased) and lives in Brookings. Carolyn, born April 24, 1935, is married to Harry Hieb and lives in Rapid City. Janice, born May 20, 1937, married Maurice Jundt and lives in Sioux Falls. CALVIN J. OPP Calvin Opp and Ella Fischer were married September 22, 1940 and moved to their own farm a short time after their marriage. Calvin was one of seven sons born to John D. and Elizabeth (Neuharth) Opp of rural Eureka, November 8, 1914. John D. was born in Gluckstal, Russia, February 3, 1877, arrived in Eureka in 1884 and homesteaded northeast of Eureka. He died November 11, 1953. Elizabeth Neuharth was born in Hutchinson County, South Dakota February 10, 1881 and died August 16, 1967. The children born to the Opps include: John, Elizabeth Ulrich, Bertha Job, Otto, Helen (Donahue) Young, Rueben, Rudolph, Pauline, Allan, Edmund, Alma Donahue, and Calvin. Ella was one of nine children born to Christ and Emma (Kusler) Fischer of Greenway August 16, 1918. (See Benny Nies history). Ella died June 24, 1983 after an extended illness. Three daughters were born to Calvin and Ella. Mary, born January 3, 1943 lives in Burnsville, Minnesota. Jean was born May 10, 1945, is married to Arlo Bertsch and lives in Bloomington, Minnesota. Kathleen, born August 9, 1952 is married to John Streifel and they live in Ashley, North Dakota. Calvin continues to operate the farm northeast of Eureka and is a member of the Reformed Church. Past activities include serving on the rural school board and church board.

EDMUND OPP Edmund Opp was born February 27, 1920, in McPherson County, Eureka, South Dakota. He was the son of John D. and Elizabeth Opp. Edmund grew up on a farm with six brothers and five sisters. The elder Opp's started farming in 1900 and retired to Eureka in 1944 where they spent their remaining years. John passed away in 1954 and his wife Elizabeth died in 1969. Hulda and Edmund Edmund and Hulda Retzer, Ashley, North Dakota, were married on August 29, 1943. It was customary in those days that the youngest son take over the family farm. Horse drawn machinery, six horses and a few cows was considered sufficient property to begin farm life. The latter 1940's became more profitable due to better crops and prices, so they were able to purchase a John Deere tractor, plow and pony drill. The pony drill was the first one ever to be sold in Eureka by Edmund's uncle Henry Opp, John Deere Implement Dealer. The following year a combine was added. Modern machines and the coming of REA resulted in a whole new way of farming. Electricity on the farm was a dream come true for the farm wife. The Opp's were involved in many activities. Hulda was educated in North Dakota and taught school for several years before and after their marriage. She was a 4-H leader for 10 years, Sunday School teacher, county extension club member, hospital auxiliary member and PTA. She served as an officer in many of these capacities. Edmund also served on the school board for many years, county extension board, museum board, Sunday School teacher, PTA, 4-H leader and is presently serving as president of the Eureka Hospital Board. The Opp's were blessed with five children, Bruce, Glenn, Nancy, Lewis and Kirk. Bruce is married to Lee Fisher and living in Dallas, Texas. Glenn is married to Sandra Krein and living on a ranch northeast of Eureka. They have two boys, Damon and Jordan. Nancy is married to Richard Speller, they have three girls, Tania, Natalie and Andrea. They reside in Jamestown, North Dakota. Lewis is married to JoAnn Albrecht, they have two children, Craig and Amy, their address is Eureka, South Dakota. Kirk is single and lives in Aberdeen, South Dakota. In 1976, a father and sons partnership was formed by Edmund, Glenn and Lewis and at that time Lewis took over the third generation family farm. The following year Edmund and Hulda purchased a new home and moved to Eureka. Edmund has been engaged in farming all his life and will retire in the spring of 1986. He was named Curator of the Eureka Pioneer Museum and will begin his duties on April 1, 1986.

Edward Neuharth family Edward is the oldest child of Jacob Neuharth, who was born in the Menno area February 10, 1884, died April 5, 1964 and Fredrica Aman, born in Eureka January 14, 1887, died June 22, 1938, daughter of Henry Aman, Sr. Edward was born October 30, 1906, attended school and lived on a farm with his parents seven miles northeast of Eureka. He has seven brothers and sisters: Emil; Fred (deceased); Anna, Mrs. John Weishaar; Bertha Krause, Mrs. Alvin Hauck; Ruben; Henry; and Esther, Mrs. Julius Pfeiffer. Adeline is the oldest child of Henry Schnabel, Eureka, born April 24, 1887, died December 27, 1970 and Paulina Berreth, Eureka, born May 2, 1890, died June 12, 1970. Adeline was born June 21, 1908 and attended school 12 miles northeast of Eureka. She has seven brothers and sisters: Otto; Edna, Mrs. Fred Neuharth (deceased); Edmund; Alvin; Gerta, Mrs. Bert Rieger; Reinhold and Elmer (deceased). Edward and Adeline were married on November 11, 1928 at the Glucksthal Reformed Church. They purchased a farm ten miles northeast of Eureka where they lived for 27 years. In 1956 they retired, purchased a house at 504 10th Street, Eureka, where they lived with the exception of six months spent in Lodi, California during the winter months of 1967-68. An annual trek to Lodi was a strong consideration, however did not materialize as Edward passed away on June 8, 1968. Their descendents are: Amanda, born November 16, 1929, married Walter Orth of Artas. They live in Lodi, California. Grandchildren: Gordon and Dale; great grandchildren are Daniel and Kimberly. Alfred, born May 13, 1932, married Laverne Ottenbacher, Eureka, they live on the Eureka family farm. Grandchildren are Bradley, Tamara, Kenneth, Ronald, and Rhonda. Alton, born October 6, 1935, died May 6, 1936. Milbert, born May 14, 1939, married Jeanette Fischer-Martin of Eureka, they live in Eureka. Grandchildren: Natalie and Brenda; great grandchild is Natasha. Floyd, born October 12, 1943, died October 14, 1943. On April 14, 1971 Adeline and Gotthilf Mehlhaff were married at the Eureka Reformed Church. Gotthilf was born in the Eureka area November 14, 1900 and died March 27 1982. Adeline continues to live in Eureka, is a member of the Reformed Ladies Aid, enjoys embroidering, crocheting and reading.

EMIL AND ERNESTINE (HAGEL) NEUHARTH Emil and Ernestine Neuharth Emil Neuharth was born November 10, 1907 at Eureka, to Jacob and Fredricka Aman. Jacob was born February 10, 1884 at Menno, South Dakota and Fredricka on January 14, 1887 at Eureka. Jacob passed away April 5, 1964 and his wife on June 20, 1937. Emil received seven years of schooling and was engaged in farming. On March 20, 1932 Emil married Ernestine Hagel, daughter of Jacob and Carolina Schauer Hagel. Ernestine was one of seven children that include: Peter, Emil, Magdalena, Leah, Martin and Edwin. Her father, Jacob Hagel, was born November 20, 1888 in Russia and mother, Carolina, was born August 25, 1890 in McIntosh County, North Dakota. Ernestine received five years of schooling. Three children were born to the Neuharths: Ariel, married to Shirley Jung and lives in Eureka. They have five children, Sharon, Lee, Nancy, Kristi and Paula. Arlet married to Harvey Wolff, was born February 14, 1935, lives in Wishek, North Dakota and has two sons, David and George. Marvolene is married to Delmer Wolff. Schnabel was born May 6, 1912 at Eureka to Henry H. and Pauline (Berreth) Schnabel. Henry H. Schnabel was born April 24, 1887 at Eureka. Pauline Berreth was born May 2, 1890 at Scotland, South Dakota. Edna was raised on a farm eleven miles northeast of Eureka in Odessa Township. Edna's brothers and sisters are Adeline Neuharth Mehlhaff, Otto, Edmund, all of Eureka; Alvin of Aberdeen; Gerda Rieger of Aberdeen; Reinhold of Lodi, California and Elmer (deceased). Fred and Edna were married on December 18, 1932. They farmed twelve miles northeast of Eureka until 1947. They moved to the Christ H. Aman farm seven miles northeast of Eureka and farmed until the fall of 1972. They moved to Eureka and resided at the experiment farm. Fred served as county commissioner for a number of years. He was a Sunday school teacher, church treasurer, elder and deacon at the Reformed Church. Fred died August 23, 1973. Edna was active in the Reformed Ladies Aid. She died May 14, 1984. Fred and Edna had three children. Delaine was born February 27, 1941 and married Duane Jantzen on June 24, 1960. They live in Dublin, California. Their children are Darel of Riverdale, California, Debbie Gravance of Laton, California and Dalene of Dublin. Carol was born June 17, 1943 and married Arnold Lutz on July 31, 1960. They live on a farm southwest of Eureka. Their children are Kip of Java, Becky Hahne of Minneapolis and Wendy Jo of Java. Robert Neuharth was born December 7, 1947. He lives in Eureka. His children are Heidi and Shane of Eureka.

RUBEN NEUHARTH Ruben Neuharth is the son of Jacob and Friedricka (Aman) Neuharth and was born May 3, 1913. He is married to Martha Goehring, born August 6, 1915 to John and Lydia (Fauth) Goehring. After their marriage on October 11, 1936, they lived five miles east and two miles north of Eureka where they farmed until their retirement in October, 1974 when their son, Charles, took over the operation. They currently reside at 413 G. Avenue in Eureka. They were blessed with three sons. Marvin, born February 27, 1939, died in an automobile accident January 1, 1958. Paul, born September 1, 1945, is married to Elva Houdyshell of Hugoton, Kansas. They were married February 2, 1969 and live in Minetare, Nebraska. They have two children, Colleen, born August 6, 1969, and Marty, born June 21, 1973. Charles, born September 24, 1953, is married to Marilyn Trautman of Artas. HENRY AND EMILIA NEUHARTH Henry was born to Jacob and Fredericka (Aman) Neuharth in 1914 who farmed seven miles northeast of Eureka. He was married to Emelia Fiechtner in June 1944 and they lived on the Neuharth farm until September 1966 when they moved to Aberdeen. Emelia was born in 1917 to Christ and Elizabeth (Bitz) Fiechtner in Eureka. Henry Neuharth Henry worked as a yard man at Peavey Lumber in Aberdeen until 1979 when he retired. He then started driving the mail route from Aberdeen to Eureka. Emelia worked at Osco Drug and at Peavey Lumber as a check out clerk. She also was a maid at N.S.C. and worked at a grocery store for a short time. Henry and Emelia were blessed with five children, all of whom were born in Eureka. They are Joyce, James, Margaret, Wayne and Linda. Joyce is married to Ed Mleczka, lives in Boise, Idaho and has one son, David; Ed is a computer operator for the state of Idaho. THEOFIEL NEUHARTH Theofiel Neuharth was born April 29, 1919 in McPherson County to Henry and Mary Kessler Neuharth. Henry was born January 30, 1889 and passed away on August 11, 1972. Mary was born in December 1891 and passed away August 18, 1968. Sisters and brothers of Theofiel are: Emma, Anna, Edward, August, Olga, Della and Vera. Mr. and Mrs. Theo Neuharth Theofiel grew up on his parents farm and attended eight years of rural school. He was inducted into the U. S. Army on November 11, 1942 and served in the Infantry - 8th Division. He was sent to the European Theater of Operations and was discharged, as a sergeant, on October 17, 1945. On July 24, 1945 he was united in marriage to Esther Fiechtner, daughter of Christ and Elizabeth Bitz Fiechtner. Christ was born May 20, 1891 and passed away in February of 1944. Elizabeth was born January 7, 1895 and passed away December 28, 1978. Theo farmed for sixteen years and then moved to Eureka in 1961 where he began working at the Eureka Equity Exchange Feedmill. The Neuharths had five children: Karen, born December 30, 1946, is married to Gene Dunker and they have six children, Tina, Scott, Tamara, Tresa, Tracy and Tonya. Wade, born February 6, 1949, is married to Kathy Skott and has two children, Shanna and Christopher. Doyle was born February 4, 1951. Judy, born May 26, 1954, is married to Tom Singer and has two children, Raschell and Brandon. Sanford was born January 12, 1962. Theofiel's wife, Esther, passed away December 18, 1969. I was born in Eureka, South Dakota, on October 19, 1917, to Daniel J. and Christina Neuharth. I married Irene Wahl of Alpena, South Dakota, on August 18, 1940. I served for three years in the US Air Force during World War II.

I owned Neuharth's mens wear clothing store in Wessington Springs, South Dakota, from 1946 - 1953.

I moved to Long Beach, California. After 28 years with the Long Beach Unified School District, I retired in February 1981.

Irene, a registered nurse, retired at the same time, after 20 years as an industrial nurse with McDonald-Douglas Corp.

Having both been world wide travelers, we visited more than 40 countries of the world and the 50 states in the USA. Genealogy of the Neuharth family, in particular, has been our hobby for more than 25 years.

We have worked on a number of philanthropic projects, mainly on Schriner's Childrens Hospital and fund raising projects.

Allen H. Neuharth (born March 22, 1924, Eureka, South Dakota) is an American businessman, author, and columnist. He is the founder of USA Today.


Neuharth graduated high school from Alpena High School, Alpena, SD, where he was editor of the school's newspaper. At the age of 19, Neuharth served in the Army in World War II. As a member of the U.S. 86th Infantry Division, Neuharth was deployed to France, Germany and the Philippines.

Education

After the war, Neuharth went to the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, where he edited the school newspaper, The Volante. He maintains an affiliation with the university and has an office in the Contemporary Media and Journalism building, The Al Neuharth Media Center. He offers a scholarship called "The Al Neuharth Free Spirit Scholarship" honoring graduating high school students who exemplify the qualities of a 'free spirit' and aim to pursue a career in journalism.

News career

Neuharth and fellow USD alum Bill Porter founded SoDak Sports, a weekly newspaper devoted to covering the sports scene in South Dakota. Despite its initial popularity, SoDak went bankrupt in a year's time.

After his failure, Neuharth went to the Miami Herald, where he made his way up to assistant managing editor. In 1960, the Knight newspaper chain (later a part of Knight-Ridder), which owned the Herald, sent him to its Detroit Free Press, which was fighting an uphill battle with the Detroit News, which Neuharth would later buy while at Gannett.[1]

After Neuharth realized that he could go no further in the Knight organization due to the Knight family's complete control, he accepted Gannett head Paul Miller's offer to move to Gannett's HQ in Rochester, New York, first to run its paper there, the Democrat and Chronicle; then to run the boardroom under Miller, who he eventually succeeded in 1973.[1] He helped to build Gannett into the largest newspaper company in the U.S.

Neuharth took charge of Gannett Florida in 1966. He started "Today" in Cocoa, Florida which eventually became Florida Today].[2]. The color schemes used in Florida Today became an inspiration for the initial format for USA Today.

USA Today

Neuharth founded USA Today in 1982, the most widely read newspaper in the country.[3] Neuharth retired from Gannett on March 31, 1989, at the age of 65.

Column

Neuharth's columns attempt to provoke controversy; so much so that he offers space for one sentence rebuttals and defense from outsiders.

On December 22, 2004, Neuharth called for American troops to be brought home from the "ill-advised adventures" in Iraq, which he compared to the immorality of the Vietnam war. Neuharth also stated that if he were eligible for service in Iraq, he would do everything possible to avoid it.

Freedom Forum

Neuharth founded and has served as chairman of the Freedom Forum since 1991.

Family

Neuharth had two adult children from his first marriage to Loretta.[5] The marriage lasted 26 years. He bought property on the beach in 1973 on which he built his current home.[6]

He was divorced by 1987 and living in Cocoa Beach, Florida.[7] His second wife was Lori Wilson, who became a Florida state senator. Their marriage lasted seven years. He is married to Dr. Rachel Fornes, a Cocoa Beach, Florida, chiropractor. They adopted eight children.[3] Neuharth also fathered an out-of-wedlock daughter, Rosamunda Neuharth-Ozgo, but never acknowledged her.[8][9]

He was the fourth child of the six children born to Christ J. and Katherina (nee Fischer) Neuharth. Brothers and sisters of Harley are: Raymond, deceased, Mrs. Vic (LuCilla) Bosma, Albert, Mrs. Helmer (Florence) Hauck, and Benjamin. Harley lived with his parents and other family members on the family farm located ten and one-half miles northeast of Eureka. He attended grade school in a rural school located in Rosenthal Township. As a young man, he farmed with his father after the other family members left the farm home. On December 25, 1951, Harley was united in marriage to Darlene Teske at the Zion American Lutheran Church in Eureka. The young couple lived with Harley's parents for a short time until they moved into Eureka. Darlene, the daughter of Theodore and Lydia (nee Rieker) Teske, was born March 30, 1931, in Hillsview, South Dakota. At age five, she, with her parents and sister, Mavis, moved to Eureka where her father was employed with the Chicago Milwaukee Railroad. Darlene attended grade school at Eureka and graduated from Eureka High School in 1949. She attended Northern State College for a year and then became a rural school teacher. Her first year of teaching was in Faulk County. She then returned to teach in the Eureka area and married Harley on Christmas Day, 1951. For some time, Darlene continued her occupation as a rural school teacher while Harley farmed with his father. The young couple then moved to Eureka where Harley was employed as a railroad laborer with Darlene's father. After this, they lived on several rented farms until 1959 when they moved back to Eureka, where Harley was employed by the Eureka Equity Exchange. In 1962, after the retirement of Harley's parents, the young family moved back to the home farm where Harley and Darlene are still residing. To this union were born three boys and three girls. They are: Randall Harley, a music teacher living in Bloomfield, Nebraska. He is married to Kay Glover and they are the parents of two boys, Christopher John and Andrew Jay. Cynthia Faye lives in Veblen, South Dakota, with her husband, Rick Hofland and their two boys, Dustin Rick and Nicholas Duane. She teaches English and Spanish in the Veblen school system. Michael Christ, who married Mickey Kerrick in Hardin, Montana, lives in Eureka and is in farming partnership with his father and brother, Jeff. They are the parents of one daughter, Brandi Jo. Jodi Ann is married to Philip Weisz and they live in Eureka where Jodi is employed as a nurse's aid at the Eureka Community Hospital. She is employed as a teacher's aid and plans to further her education in the field of teaching. Jeffrey Theodore is also living in Eureka with his wife, Dana (nee Miller). Jeff is in partnership with his father and brother, Mike, in the family farm operation. Both Harley and Darlene have been actively involved in church and community affairs. They are members of the Eureka Reformed Church where Harley was a past Sunday School superintendent and teacher. He was also a deacon and treasurer of the Church. His other activities include past Jaycee member, presently a member of the Eureka Lions, Hospital Board member, board member of the Eureka Development Corporation and McPherson County Commissioner. Fishing is one of his special recreational interests. In 1967, Darlene made the decision to go back to college and get her teaching degree. She taught school at Long Lake for two years while attending college during the summers, taking extension courses and doing some correspondence work. In 1972, she received her B.A. at Northern State College and became employed with the Eureka school system. Here she teaches seventh and eighth grade Math and Science. Darlene's outside activities include Reformed Church Ladies Aid and Choir, South Dakota Education Association, Eureka Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, P.T.A., Eureka Theatrical Company, past Sunday School and Bible School teacher, past Jaycette, Extension Club member, and 4-H leader. Her favorite form of recreation is reading, especially historical novels, and collecting ethnic cookbooks. In 1971, a new house was built on the farm where Harley and Darlene are still residing. This house has been the happy gathering place for all family members on such special occasions as Christmas, Thanksgiving and family reunions.

ORVILLE KNAPP

Orville Knapp family

Orville Knapp was born at Eureka, South Dakota on October 19, 1924, to Jacob
and Christina (Opp) Knapp. He received his grade school education near there.
He served in Attu in the Aleutian Islands during World War II. He was married
to Wilma Opp on December 1, 1946 at Eureka, South Dakota, following his
honorable discharge from the U. S. Army. In October of 1947 the couple
purchased the Calvin Mehlhaff farm located two and one-half miles south of
Eureka where they actively farmed until it became necessary to discontinue due
to Orville's diabetes, sight loss and eventual total kidney failure. From
April, 1983 he had continual dialysis treatment twice weekly at the V.A.
Hospital, Minneapolis, then three times weekly at St. Luke's Hospital traveling
500 miles weekly to Aberdeen. In October 1983 he had his first kidney
transplant at the V. A. Hospital in Minneapolis which again had to be removed
ten days later due to a blood clot in the kidney. In August of 1983 our new
home was started in Eureka which we moved into on November 11, 1983. In
December of that year our own dialysis unit was installed by the V. A. His
dialyist was Carla Rohrbach until he received his second kidney transplant in
October 1984. Six months later our home dialysis unit was removed from our home
and placed in the local clinic where it is currently being utilized by Julius
Boschee, Zeeland. Our room was then converted into a fourth bedroom in the lower
level. Since then to the present, Orville has had repeated surgeries for
abdominal infection and had cataract surgery and a lens implant done in
January of 1986 with hopes of having the same done in the other eye in April of
1986. Because of illness Orville was forced to retire at age 55 from farming
and employment with Eureka Equity Exchange as a licensed plumber, later working
in the automotive department at the Farm Store. He served on the County ASCS
committee, on the McPherson County Education Board, was active in the American
Legion, a member of the VFW and enjoyed bowling and golfing.

Wilma Opp was born June 3, 1926 at Eureka, South Dakota to John J. and Emelia
(Lapp) Opp. She received her grade school education near there and graduated
from Eureka High School in 1945. She attended Northern Normal in Aberdeen for a
summer session in 1945 and taught rural school for one year before her marriage
and one year following. On March 13, 1961 she began her job at the Northwest
Blade and this year will observe 25 years of continuous employment there as
typesetter, bookkeeper and secretary, having worked under three different
editors, currently Arlo C. Mehlhaff. She is a member of the Farmerettes Club,
American Legion Auxiliary and enjoys yard work, cooking, embroidering and
reading.

Daughter Marcia Kay was born to the couple on March 28, 1948 at Eureka where
she attended grade and high school. For the past 12 years she has been employed
as a nurses aide at the Eureka Lutheran Home and continues to live with her
parents. Her hobbies include embroidering, latchhook craft and bowling.

Daughter Sheila Ann was born October 5, 1953 at Eureka, where she attended
grade school, graduating from Eureka High School in 1971. She attended Northern
State College in Aberdeen for one year and completed her additional four years
at South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota where she received
her pharmacy degree in May 1976. On May 18, 1974 she was united in marriage to
William Fred Hoffman at Eureka Reformed Church. William graduated from South
Dakota State University, Brookings in 1976 with degrees in Chemistry and
Biology, later attended two years of study at Westminster Seminary in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He operated the business known as Hoffman Parts and
Service at Leola until selling out. At present he teaches math courses
part-time at Aberdeen Central High School and also is working towards his
masters degree at Northern State College. They adopted a son, Jared
Christopher, at age six and one-half months in September of 1980 who was born
March 17, 1980. Jared attends kindergarten currently at the Baptist Christian
School in Aberdeen, where the family lives in their mobile home at Lakeside
Estates.

Sheila is employed as a full-time pharmacist at Osco Drug, Aberdeen and
previously had worked in both drug stores in Eureka and surrounding towns
including Aberdeen.

Orville Knapp died May 1, 1986.

CLARENCE AND LUCEIL OPP Clarence Opp family Clarence Opp was born July 1, 1930 in Eureka, South Dakota to August and Emma Opp who farmed near Eureka until they retired to the Eureka Sunrise Addition. Clarence has two sisters: Violet (Mrs. Marvin Kramlich) and Virginia (Mrs. Duane Doerr). Luceil Klipfel was born at Ashley, North Dakota on February 19, 1933 to Julius and Ruth (Haerter) Klipfel. She has one brother, Roger, and a sister, JoAnn (Mrs. Duane Goebel). Clarence Opp and Luceil Klipfel were married October 7, 1951 and moved to the Art Opp farm northeast of Eureka. They lived through a hard winter their first year. There was so much snow they couldn't get their car out for six weeks. Their neighbors, Alvin Opp's, would pick them up with a homemade sled and a team of horses so they could market their eggs and cream. After three years they moved to the Art Pfeifle farm, then in 1962 they purchased the August Opp homestead where they are still living at this time. Clarence and Luceil Opp have two children: Carmen, born June 15, 1952, attended Eureka School and Northern State College at Aberdeen. She works as a secretary and is an aerobics instructor. She married Mike Nelson on August 12, 1972, they have two children: Jillian Ruth and Benjamen Mike and live in Fremont, Nebraska. Keith, born July 16, 1954 attended school in Eureka and Lake Area Vo Tech at Watertown, South Dakota where he graduated as an Auto Mechanic in 1974. He was in the military service from 1975 to 1978. He married Audhild Tofte March 1, 1985 at Oslo, Norway where he is a pilot for Aerial Photography. The Clarence Opps are members of the Eureka Reformed Church where they both teach Sunday School and sing in the choir. Clarence is a past J. C. member, member of Sportsman Club, and served on the Rural School Board, County A.S.C.S. He has played baseball and softball and enjoys horseshoe and bowling. Luceil is a member of Reformed Ladies Aid, Eureka Theatrical Co., was a 4-H Leader and works at the Midway Cafe. She enjoys sewing, knitting, crocheting and gardening.

LEWIS AND JO ANN OPP Lewis Opp, the son of Edmund and Hulda Opp of Eureka, and Jo Ann (Meidinger) Opp, the daughter of Albert and Martha Meidinger of Eureka, were married on July 23, 1983. Lewis and Jo Ann Opp and family Lewis attended the Eureka Public School System where he graduated from high school. He then attended Northern State College in Aberdeen, South Dakota, where he graduated with a B. S. in Sociology and Psychology. After graduation, he returned to Eureka where he presently owns and operates a cattle ranch at the family's farmstead, six miles north, and seven miles east of Eureka. He has been a member of the Eureka Jaycees, the Sportsman Club, the Eureka Chapter of Duck's Unlimited, and the Eureka P.T.A. Jo Ann also attended the Eureka Public School System where she graduated from high school. She then attended Northern State College and graduated with a B. S. in Secondary Music Education. While in college, she belonged to the Collegiate Choir, the Northern Singers, Marching Band, and was a member of Sigma Alpha Iota, a women's music fraternity. After graduation, she taught Jr. High Band and Chorus for two years, at Northwestern High School, in Mellette, South Dakota. She then moved back to Eureka in 1972 with her first husband, Larry Albrecht, and son, Craig, where they owned and operated Larry's Jack and Jill and Larry's Meat Market, until his death in December of 1981. After selling the store in August of 1982, she began working as a secretary for Milbert Schick at Eureka Realty. JoAnn has kept busy with various music activities in the church and community, as well as holding offices in the local P.T.A. She has also been serving on the Eureka Centennial Entertainment Committee. Lewis and Jo Ann are both members of the Eureka Reformed Church. They have two children, Craig, who is presently attending Moorhead State College in Moorhead, Minnesota, as a computer and business major, and Amy who is a student at the Eureka Public School System.

Alfred Neuharth was born May 13, 1932 to Edward and Adeline (Schnabel) Neuharth
at Eureka. He has one sister living in Lodi, Amanda Orth, and one brother,
Milbert, living in Eureka. His brothers, Alton and Floyd, are deceased.

Alfred attended rural school in Rosenthal Township and, on August 23, 1959 he
married Laverne Marion Ottenbacher, daughter of Herbert and Viola (Rau)
Ottenbacher. Laverne was born March 27, 1939 in Eureka. Laverne has two
brothers: Herman, Watertown, South Dakota; Arnold, Aberdeen, South Dakota; and
one sister, Eunice, Raquette Lake, New York.

Laverne attended rural school in Bauer Township and graduated from Eureka High
School in 1957. After graduation she began working as a bookkeeper for the
Eureka Equity Exchange, where she was employed until 1965.

Alfred and Laverne have five children, Bradley, Tamara, Kenneth, Ronald and
Rhonda.

Bradley Alan, born March 1, 1961, graduated from Eureka High School in 1979 and
from Lake Area Vocational Technical Institute at Watertown in 1981. He
currently farms with his parents.

Tamara Kay, born January 23, 1962, graduated from Eureka High School in 1980
and attended USD in Vermillion for three years, majoring in speech pathology.
She currently attends SDSU in Brookings majoring in nursing. She will become
the bride of Brian Kirkvold on August 1, 1986 and will be living in Hendricks,
Minnesota.

Kenneth Alfred, born March 16, 1965, graduated from Eureka High School in 1983
and currently attends SDSU majoring in computer science.

Ronald Lee and Rhonda Dee were born October 4, 1966 and graduated from Eureka
