This history of George G. and Christina (Goehring) Neuharth is taken from the Eureka Golden Jubilee Book ? 1887-1937. It tells of the struggles, endurance and perseverance of these early pioneers who came to settle in this new area.

"Hey! Yippee! Youuu, get along there! Haww! Haww!" might we1l have been the shouts of young George G. Neuharth in 1885 as he wearily trudged the long dusty miles from Men1o. S.D. to the "'Eureka Country" with a herd of forty frisky, hard-to-manage young cattle. Prairie fires, raging blizzards, which piled snow shanty high. stock raising, wine business and promoting the worthwhile hospital project have been just a few of the many experiences of this fine Eureka citizen.

George G. Neuharth, born November 20, 1861, at Kassel, South Russia, accompanied his parents as a young lad to the United States in 1814. The family first settled thirty five miles northwest of Yankton, S.D., then the farthest point west of settlement in that section.

Life was a hard battle during those first few years in this country. The necessity of a cash income prompted the performing of varied tasks. The winter of 1880, one of deep snow. was spent in cutting wood which was hauled as fuel to Menno. During this winter period, trains had stopped running and desperate measures had to be taken to supply fuel to homes in order to keep from freezing.

On January 16. 1883, George G. Neuharth married Christina Goehring, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gottfried Goehring, at the Bright Church in Menno.

Experiencing difficulty in providing water for stock in that vicinity, young George Neuharth decided to look for another location. Land was being opened for homestead entry farther north, and as a result the young couple determined to push on into this wild new country. The following year (1884), Mr. and Mrs. Neuharth, accompanied by a large party of settlers, left Menno for what is now the northern part of the state. Included in this group were the following families: Mr. and Mrs. George J. Hieb, Jacob Burrer, Christ Burrer, Val Mettler, John Knapp, Fred V. Mettler, Nick Lechner, Henry Schnabel, Jacob Meidinger. John Becker. Karl Fink, John Quaschnick. Dan Quaschnick, Martin Bickel, Andrew Hoff. Fred Hoff, and Phil Thurmaier.. The party traveled west from Frederick (the end of the railroad) where Mr. Neuharth loaded his team with lumber and provisions and entered McPherson County on May 10, 1884. They joumeyed as far west as the present site of Herreid, S.D., and not being impressed with the land ahead, turned back and finally settled in the territory about fourteen miles northeast of the present site of Eureka. At that time the county was surveyed only into townships, so to determine present day sites is now rather difficult. .

The first week after their arrival was spent in a tent until a 12 by 16 ft. shanty had been erected. In the fall a more substantial dwelling, a sod house, became their home. Eight years later, their economic circumstances permitted the construction of a frame building which is still occupied (1937) and in good condition. The shanty was used as a church for years.

Mr. Neuharth was resourceful and his activities were varied. He spent much of his time assisting newcomers in locating their claims. Carpenter work was plentiful, and he worked at it intermittently. One of his prize possessions is a small workbench, which he made when he was seventeen years of age.

Trading during the first three years was done at Frederick and Ipswich, SD. Buffalo bones were the stock-in trade. They were picked off the prairies, loaded on wagons, hauled to distant towns and bartered for provisions. A load of buffalo bones varied from $8.00 to $12.00 in value. Travel was by ox team, and exceedingly slow; several days were spent on the trip (The first train to arrive at the townsite of Eureka was on July 27, 1887).

A prairie fire that ravaged the countryside made the fall of 1884 a very gloomy one. Feed and fuel had been destroyed. After a torturous winter of weed burning to provide warmth and fuel for cooking, the warmer days of spring were hope-renewing. Mr. Neuharth had returned to the Menno country during the summer of 1884 and had harvested a 600 bushel flax crop which he sold for $400.00. This sum was a godsend during the dreary winter that followed.

His first flax crop sown here, mainly for seed, was picked by hand. The lack of implements hindered progress and sometimes accidents and weather conditions apparently stopped it temporarily.

During the spring of 1885, Mr. Neuharth walked back from the Menno territory with forty head of young cattle which were later sold as oxen. His livestock during that year consisted of two horses, two oxen, and one cow.
At this time 200 acres of grain were usually seeded each year. One or two young men, as yet unsettled, were hired to assist with the work.

The winters of 1886 to 1889 were especially severe with heavy snowfall. Mr. Neuharth took care of about seventy-five head of stock through the winter months of these years. The snow was so deep that the house was entirely covered and tunneling from house to barn was a common necessity. The snow crusts were so hard that it was nothing unusual for the stock to walk over the tops of the buildings. The men had to carry all the feed by band and they often labored in the barns all day. Lights were required in the daytime because of the snow blockade.

Although the hardships were at times discouraging, every year brought some progress. More land was acquired. Life became somewhat easier as closer markets removed the necessity of making tedious journeys to market; increased settlement brought about a more normal social life. When a church had been established, Mr. Neuharth spent many years as a Sunday School teacher and as an organist for cburch services.

A severe diptheria epidemic during the winter of 1896 claimed many lives in the community. At this distressing time the Neuharths lost two sons and-a daughter within a period of three days. In 1904 Mr. Neuharth gave up farming, moved to Eureka, and acquired an interest in the general merchandise business of Fred Preszler and John Pietz. In 1905 because of his son George's health, Mr. Neuharth disposed of his business interests and moved his family to Lodi, California. The son, George died there. Not satisfied with California surroundings. the Neuharths returned to Eureka where they engaged in the wholesale wine business, dealing with former associates in California. Ten years in this occupation resulted in the disposal of an even 100 carloads of wine. After prohibition was declared, the fruit business occupied his interest for three years, after which he entered the hardware business with his son, John. They operated in connection with the Eureka Bazaar.

After retiring from active business in 1923, Mr. Neuharth has devoted much time to civic activities. He served for several years as first chairman of the Eureka Hospital Association, and is at the present time still interested as a director of the board. At one time he served as a bank director, and was interested in the Dakota Utilities Company and the Dakota Land and Loan Company. As city alderman for several terms, Mr. Neuharth displayed fine citizenship.

The Neuharths happily celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary on January 16, 1933. Mrs. Neuharth has the distinction of being the only woman of the eighty-four immigrants, with whom she arrived, to be living in Eureka today (at the time this history was written. however, Mrs. Neuharth died March 27, 1937, age 73, about three months before the Eureka Golden Jubilee Celebration, June 16, 17 and 18, 1937).

The family of fourteen children consisted of nine sons and five daughters. Seven of this number are living today (1937) and there are twenty-five grand eleven great-grandchildren. The living children of this union are: Christina, born January 12, 1885, now Mrs. Christian D. Opp, Eureka; Katherina. Born February 10, 1888, now Mrs. Fred Hoff; Margaret, born June 3, 1889, now Mrs. Christ J. Ehresman, Roscoe; John, born May 22, 1898, Eureka; Gottfried, born April 24, 1900, Aberdeen; Elisabeth, born January 17, 1902, now Mrs. Theophil Mehlhaff, Eureka; and Edwin, born April 8, 1905, Eureka.

GEORGE G. NEUHARTH was born November 20, 1861 at Kassel, South Russia to George, Sr., and Barbara (Schnabel) Neuharth. He married Christina Goehring who was born September 13, 1863 to Gottfried and Margaretha (Neuharth) Goehring at Kassel, South Russia. Christina died March 27, 1937 and George G. died March 2, 1958. They had 14 children. After Christina's death, George married Fredericka Mehlhaff (widow of John Mehlhaff, Sr.).

George G. Neuharth and family farmed until 1904 when the family moved into Eureka and George was involved in several successful business ventures. In the fall of 1937 he married Fredricka Mehlhaff, widow of John Mehlhaff, Sr., and they enjoyed many years of retirement together in Eureka. Fredericka's parents were Christoph and Fredericka (Kugel) Goehring. After Fredericka's death. Mr. Neuharth lived with his daughters in the area, enjoying helping with various chores. He enjoyed traveling and visiting grandchildren and the numerous relatives. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and appreciated small favors. He enjoyed remarkably good health all his life and died at the age of 96. George and Christina Neuharth are buried in the Eureka City Cemetery. At the time of this writing, December 1993, daughter Elisabeth, Mrs. Theophil Mehlhaff, lived at Lodi. California.

EDWARD AND ADELINE NEUHARTH Edward Neuharth family Edward is the oldest child of Jacob Neuharth, who was born in the Menno area February 10, 1884, died April 5, 1964 and Fredrica Aman, born in Eureka January 14, 1887, died June 22, 1938, daughter of Henry Aman, Sr. Edward was born October 30, 1906, attended school and lived on a farm with his parents seven miles northeast of Eureka. He has seven brothers and sisters: Emil; Fred (deceased); Anna, Mrs. John Weishaar; Bertha Krause, Mrs. Alvin Hauck; Ruben; Henry; and Esther, Mrs. Julius Pfeiffer. Adeline is the oldest child of Henry Schnabel, Eureka, born April 24, 1887, died December 27, 1970 and Paulina Berreth, Eureka, born May 2, 1890, died June 12, 1970. Adeline was born June 21, 1908 and attended school 12 miles northeast of Eureka. She has seven brothers and sisters: Otto; Edna, Mrs. Fred Neuharth (deceased); Edmund; Alvin; Gerta, Mrs. Bert Rieger; Reinhold and Elmer (deceased). Edward and Adeline were married on November 11, 1928 at the Glucksthal Reformed Church. They purchased a farm ten miles northeast of Eureka where they lived for 27 years. In 1956 they retired, purchased a house at 504 10th Street, Eureka, where they lived with the exception of six months spent in Lodi, California during the winter months of 1967-68. An annual trek to Lodi was a strong consideration, however did not materialize as Edward passed away on June 8, 1968. Their descendents are: Amanda, born November 16, 1929, married Walter Orth of Artas. They live in Lodi, California. Grandchildren: Gordon and Dale; great grandchildren are Daniel and Kimberly. Alfred, born May 13, 1932, married Laverne Ottenbacher, Eureka, they live on the Eureka family farm. Grandchildren are Bradley, Tamara, Kenneth, Ronald, and Rhonda. Alton, born October 6, 1935, died May 6, 1936. Milbert, born May 14, 1939, married Jeanette Fischer-Martin of Eureka, they live in Eureka. Grandchildren: Natalie and Brenda; great grandchild is Natasha. Floyd, born October 12, 1943, died October 14, 1943. On April 14, 1971 Adeline and Gotthilf Mehlhaff were married at the Eureka Reformed Church. Gotthilf was born in the Eureka area November 14, 1900 and died March 27 1982. Adeline continues to live in Eureka, is a member of the Reformed Ladies Aid, enjoys embroidering, crocheting and reading.

ANDREW J. AND SOFIA HOFF-GOEHRING FAMILY

Andrew J. Goehring was born January 18, 1874, in South Russia to Jacob and Katharina Goehring. He was a horseherd in a "darf' until he was ten years old, when he came to America with his parents and four sisters. They landed in the U.S. in May 1884, and came to Hutchinson County, near Freeman, South Dakota where they settled on a farm.
On June 27, 1897, he was united in marriage to Sofia Hoff, who had been born March 12, 1878 near Freeman, South Dakota. Shortly thereafter they filed on a government homestead in Charles Mix County. In 1906 Andrew and family moved to Bridgewater where he and his father conducted an International farm implement and equipment business. In 1909 he came to Hyde County and located on a farm in Lincoln Township where Carl Ashdown now lives. Twelve children were born to this union:

Emma died at 7 years with diphtheria;

Andrew, Jr. who lived in Hyde County and Oakland, California where he died August 23, 1964;

Anna married Ira Smith and died in San Diego, California on August 31, 1971;

Emil farmed in Hyde County and worked for various farmers here until his death in Miller on Feb.5, 1974.

Kathryn married Victor (Bud) Stoner and lives at El Cajon, California;

Emma married George Smith and lives at St. Onge, South Dakota;

Adeline married Orpheus Weniger and died January 1962 in Kevin, Montana;

Arthur died at Mitchell on October 23, 1934;

Alvin was accidentally shot and killed when kids were playing with a gun in April 1920, when he was 10 years old;

Martha married George Huss and lives in Huron, South Dakota;

Viola married George DeLong and died in Huron on September 27, 1967;

Edwin lives in Denver, Colorado.

Sofia passed away on June 28, 1919, in childbirth. She was a hard-working, patient, kind, and loving mother, a wonderful cook and seamstress. After her death it was up to Kathryn and the younger girls to care for the family as Anna was married and away from home. It was quite a responsibility and lots of hard work. Eight loaves of bread had to be baked twice a week and sometimes more. There was cooking for threshers, raising chickens, gardening, washing, household chores, etc. etc.
Andrew was a hard worker and very versatile. He did blacksmith work, shoe repairing, harness mending, carpentry, mechanics, butchering, and animal husbandry. Many times he did blacksmith work and other things for neighbors at his own expense and never received payment. He liked his homemade wine and beer. He was intelligent and did much reading. Unlike many immigrants from older countries in central Europe, he was quick to accept and adopt new ideas and methods. He was stern, fair, kind, and strict. He didn't spare the rod with his children. He was musical and played the violin, accordion, and harmonica, which gave the family a little entertainment and a break from the hard work, heartaches, and sadness. He loved to hunt prairie chickens, pheasants, and cottontails.
A minister came occasionally to hold services at the school three miles from home. He would come to dinner and Andrew loved to argue obscure points of the Bible with him. When the minister was absent Andrew would sometimes take over the services.
On December 12, 1920, Andrew married Emma (Hintz) Rittel who had been born on a farm near Parkston, South Dakota on April 23, 1887. She had five children from her previous marriage to David J. Rittel of Bowdle, South Dakota who died November 7, 1918. The children were:

William, who lives in Sturgis;

Arthur, who lives in Highmore;

Esther, Mrs. Harley Dalton, of Highmore;

Adeline, who married George Hirsch and then William Schuette, and passed away November 30,1973 at Highmore;

Daniel who lives at Anoka, Minnesota.

Emma was a kind, gentle person but of strong will. She was motherly, but like people of German ancestry there was no public show of affection.
Andrew and Emma had four children: 1. Raymond, who lives in Ft. Pierre; 2. Agnes, who married Virgil Stuart and lives in Ventura, California; 3. Ruth is married to Merle Westcott and lives in Sioux Falls; and 4. Bernard lives at Great Falls, Montana.
Andrew died very suddenly early in the morning at his farm on March 23, 1930, from heart failure.
Emma died at her home in Highmore on August 28, 1950.

Charles Goehring was born December 13, 1884, in Hutchinson County near Freeman, South Dakota to Jacob and Katharina Goehring. He was baptized in the German Reform Church. As a youth he took a course in steam engineering at the Agricultural College at Brookings and attended the Sioux Falls Business College.
He was pitching for a baseball team when he met Emma Maria Christina (Mary) Baumgart whom he married on October 6, 1906; in Bridgewater, South Dakota. She had been born March 6, 1888 at Boone, Iowa, to George and Barbara Baumgart. She came to South Dakota with her brother John and worked in a hotel in Menno, South Dakota.
Charles worked with his father in their International Farm Implement business in Bridgewater until 1907 when he began farming in Hutchinson County. Their first daughter, 1. Ruby, was born on October 10, 1907, on the same farm where Charles had been born.
In 1909 Charles and family, along with Andrew and Fred, his brothers, decided to move west because they had become more or less hemmed in by Mennonites. Land seemed more plentiful, however, they found the soil not nearly as rich nor did it rain as much as in Hutchinson County, but they decided to stay in Hyde County. Charles settled on a farm in Lincoln Town-ship. While there they had a second daughter, 2. Elaine, born on February 21, 1910. They moved to another farm in Valley Township where 3. Gertrude was born April 11, 1912, .and 4. Wilbur on February 1, 1915.
They farmed there until they moved to Highmore for a short time in 1917 before moving to a farm in Loomis Township in 1918. Their last son, 5. Norval, was born there on October 25, 1927, and in November they moved into their new house that Mary had waited for for so many years.
Charles was a raiser and breeder of fine horses. He held a horse sale on June 22, 1927, (because of the shortness of pasture), in which he sold 85 head of horses from Percheron and Belgian studs which averaged $67. The top price was slightly over $150. His 15 yearlings averaged $40 and three six-year-olds sold for $140 each. He always had a large herd of horses.
Mary organized what is believed to be the first 4-H club in Hyde County in August 1929, called the 4-H Canning Club at Holabird, South Dakota, with eight members. In 1936, Charles was elected a member of the board of directors of the Hyde County Agricultural Conservation Association which was to have charge of the new national soil conservation program. He made out work sheets for farms making appraisals of the productivity of the land that is diverted from soil depleting crops to soil conserving crops. He served for a number of years on this committee and was always active in conservation and agricultural programs. He was active in community affairs including township boards and school boards.
Charles and Mary were charter members of the Aasby Local Farmers Union, later known as the Loomis Local Charles was an avid hunter and enjoyed hunting deer and pheasants especially. He made many trips to the Black Hills hunting and had some of his trophies mounted. Charles had a faith and vision of the future of South Dakota. He loved the land and stock and had a knowledge of farming and a belief in the rewards of hard work. In spite of all the drawbacks, it was "his dream." California was for others. Poor they were at times, but. so rich in experiences.
The winter of 1951-52 was a hard winter with roads blocked already in early December. Charles had to be flown from his farm to Highmore so he could go to hospitals in Rochester and Huron for treatments of cancer. He battled his cancer until his death on May 7, 1952.
After Charles' death, Norval operated the farm for a time. Mary moved to town to live with her son Wilbur for a while until she moved into her own home in Highmore. She boarded high school students for a number of years. She was active in community affairs and was a member of the Women's Relief Corp and Porch Club. She was a member of the Our Savior Lutheran Church. She lived for a few years in old folks' homes in Miller and Highmore before dying on November 20, 1970.

Ruby married John Strohmenger and lives in Fremont, California.

Elaine is married to Henry Borcherding and runs a yarn and hobby shop in Highmore.

Gertrude married Richard Schlenker (now deceased) and lives in Highmore.

Wilbur married Agnes Haiwick, farmed in Loomis Township, and is now deceased.

Norval is married to Vera Spillaway and is a mail carrier living in Hitchcock, South Dakota.

Fred Goehring was born on October 15, 1892, in Hutchinson County near Freeman, South Dakota to Jacob and Katharina Goehring. He came to Hyde County with his parents and brothers in 1909.
He married Cora Smith on November 1, 1913. Cora's parents came to Hyde County from Fremont, Nebraska in 1883, the second pioneers to settle on a homestead in Loomis Township. Cora was born on January 13, 1894. To this union nine children were born:

Herbert now lives in El Sobrante, California;

Nadine Tenbrook in Pleasureville, California;

Bernice Michel in Linden, California; (twin to Beatrice)

Beatrice Kirk in Burson, California;

Willard in Turlock, California;

Leonard in Denair, California;

Marilyn Crowl in Fair Oaks, California.

One child died in infancy.

Fred farmed in Loomis and Valley townships. He was the leader in a dance band that played for dances around Hyde County for a number of years. He played the violin. They left Hyde County and moved to the Black Hills in late 1929. Fred farmed near Rapid City and Sturgis until 1934, when they moved to California and located near Lockeford, where he ranched until his health broke and he had to give it up.
In 1938 he and Rev. Wm. Graves came from California to hold special evangelistic services in the Highmore Court House. They helped to organize the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Highmore in December of 1938.
During World War II he was a guard at the shipyard in Alameda, California. He suffered from arthritis and asthma and entered Mark Twain Hospital at San Andreas, California where he died on February 10, 1958.
At present (1977) Cora is in a nursing home in Lodi, California. She is 83 years old and in very poor health.
