    EDWARD R. AND ROSA HOFFMAN Edward R. Hoffman family Edward R. Hoffman was born October 6, 1898, at Long Lake, South Dakota, to Jackob Hoffman, Sr. and Katharina Goehring. Jackob was born September 8, 1852, and died October 18, 1941. Katharina was born March 11, 1860 and died in April 1937. Both were born in Bergdorf, South Russia, and died in Ashley, North Dakota. They emigrated to the United States in 1884, to Menno, South Dakota. In the spring of 1885, they went by train to Ipswich, then by oxen to Long Lake, South Dakota. Edward's brothers and sisters were John; Jacob, Jr.; Julius; Arthur; Ben; Mrs. Magdalena (John) Schumacher; Lydia; Mrs. Kathryn (August) Lippert; Mrs. Christina (Albert) Werre; Mrs. Rosa (Theodore) Brenner; and a brother who died in infancy. Edward and Rosa B. Thurn were married November 29, 1923. Rosa was the daughter of George Thurn, Sr. and Fredericka Nelich. Both Mr. and Mrs. Thurn were born in Glucksthal, South Russia, emigrated to Wishek, North Dakota, were married there in 1899, and moved to a farm southeast of Eureka. They retired in 1935, moved to Eureka, and their son, Rudolph, took over the farm. Rosa's brothers and sisters are Lydia Thurn; Mrs. Pauline (Ludwig) Schumacher; George Thurn, Jr.; Mrs. Amelia (Arthur) Hoffman; Mrs. Bertha (Otto) Wolff; Rudolph G. Thurn; and Mrs. Frieda (Ernest) Ottmar. Edward and Rosa had two children, Bernice and LeRoy. Bernice married Otto H. Fauth. Their children are Janet Marie (Vernon) Bitz, Kathryn (Gregory) Oswald, Sandra Mae Fauth, LuAnn (Terrance) Kealey, and Wade Otto Fauth. Bernice has two grandchildren, Dustin LeRoy Bitz and Andrew Joseph Oswald. LeRoy, married Claudia Boettcher and has two children, Thurn Edward Hoffman who married Sandra Seacat, and Charles Boettcher Hoffman who married Holly Wanner. Their great grandchild is Austin Boettcher Hoffman. Both of Edward Hoffman's children have passed away, Bernice on September 26, 1982, and LeRoy on November 26, 1980. Edward and Rosa still live on the farm home west of Long Lake. Edward has been active in community activities; for many years he served as the rural church secretary and for sixteen years, on the rural school board. He also measured land for the county for over sixteen years. The Hoffmans are very active in the Eureka Senior Center. They now have the great joy of watching the first member of the fifth generation of Hoffmans begin life on Hoffman land settled over one hundred years ago. This member is Austin Boettcher Hoffman, the son of Charles Boettcher Hoffman and Holly (Wanner) Hoffman.
