Birkenhoerdt, near Bad Bergzabern, in the Rheinland- Pfalz area of Germany, is the ancestral home of Balthasar Seibert (b. 1 Feb 1816) and Margaretha Wegman Seibert (b. March 1816). They married 25 May 1846 in Birkenhoerdt. Elisabeth Seibert (later Huntley) was b. 13 November 1846. This information is known to us through matching the names and birth dates of family members with information from the Catholic Church in Birkenhoerdt, which information has been transcribed and entered into the computerized records of the LDS (Mormon) Church. These records and the family connections may be confirmed on line at www.FamilySearch.com According to the records of FamilySearch, Balthasar Seibert had 3 brothers and sisters: Jacob b. 20 March 1819; Elisabetha Catharina b. 3 Jan 1824; and Antonius b. 16 September 1826. Jacob may have married Anna Maria Emanuel, 17 Feb 1846; he is believed to have gone to the DuQuoin, IL area at an unknown date with wife and family. It is uncertain what became of the other brother and sister. The lack of information about the sister, and the fact that her name was assigned to Balthasar's first child, leads me to theorize she may have died as an infant. Margaretha Wegman was one of 10 children; much information is available at www.FamilySearch. com. The Balthasar Seibert family emigrated to the U. S. either in 1849 (probable) or 1850, to Rochester, NY. There is an entry on the 1850 census which may belong to them (names may be misspelled), along with a possible brother of Margaretha Wegman named Andrew (Andreas) Wegman. Elisabeth is the only child known to have been born in Germany; her baptismal record is available. Her sister Emma, born either in NY or possibly in Germany, died as an infant, and is said to be buried in New York. Katherine Seibert was born in Rochester, NY in 1852, and Mary Seibert in Illinois in c. 1858. The Seiberts moved from NY to IL some time between 1852 and 1858, and spent most of their time either in or around DuQuoin, IL or Belleville, IL. Much additional information about the Seiberts and Wegmans in Germany is available through www. FamilySearch. com, and additional information is known about the Huntleys and Seiberts from family sources. We hope to write a "complete report" of the lives, family connections and life stories about the German families and the Huntleys in Caruthersville, sometime in the next few months._________________________________ This document was prepared 4/11/2001 by Robert Donnell, son of Evelyn McDonald Donnell, daughter of Elizabeth Huntley. BIOGRAPHY: Hi Recs - pleasure hearing from you. Thanks for thinking, still, about the
Eisenhauer letters. I've been swamped, too, and gone little farther, but
am still very interested. I entered a couple quick comments yesterday, which you acknowledged below.
I have today exchanged emails with Sherry Mitchell, the source of the hard copy documents which substantiated my comments of yesterday... She tells me there is even more documentation (three later census reports) confirming the idea that Ferdinand Seibert was born in Rochester, New York
in 1851 rather than in Illinois (which information is listed in the 1870 and 1880 census reports). The confusion over whether Ferdinand was born in Illinois or in Rochester, New York, is not completely resolved in favor of Rochester, as far as I am concerned (and this is an important point for us
in attempting to determine when Jacob and Balthasar Seibert, both living in Rochester starting in 1850, may have left for Illinois). I apologize for not having begun to provide substantial the results of my
research into the descendants of Balthasar and Anton, those two brothers of Jacob Seibert (b. c. 1818 in Birkenhoerdt). I am close to beginning to provide you with my results, and will document each "claim" as thoroughly as possible for your records. Even before beginning to do so, however, I would like to put on paper a very important set of insights concerning Anton Seibert. He has for some
time been recorded in the online database of the Birkehoerdt Project as having "disappeared", essentially (no information re marriage or death was available). I think I know the answers to all these questions, and will outline these below. More importantly, the insight which allowed me to
make the identification of Anton Seibert of Birkenhoerdt as being the same Anton Seibert living in Belleville, Illinois by 1855 at the latest, is based on information known only to me, and which I think it is entirely possible no one could with certainly reproduce. For this reason, I'd like to go ahead now and give you the basis for this important "conclusion". (I'll sleep better knowing someone else knows this information, frankly.) Hardcore documentation proving beyond any doubt that the Anton Seibert
born in Birkenhoerdt and brother to Jacob and Balthasar was the same person as the Anton Seibert living in Belleville, Illinois in 1855 has not been found, even after a very diligent search effort. The evidence I have collected is nonetheless compelling for me, that the two Antons are the same person. My evidence is the following: In 1972 I traveled to Du Quoin, Illinois, to research Seibert family
history. I met by accident a man named Alvin Seibert, almost 80 years old, in Du Quoin. While he told me that he was a grandson of a man named Jacob Seibert, I did not know for sure whether he was a descendant of the "right" Jacob Seibert - of the man who was brother to my ancestor Caspar
Balthasar (& Margaretha Wegmann) Seibert. It was clearly possible that he and I were descended from different groups of Seiberts. Although neither he nor I was able to connect our two families with certainty, he told me what he knew about his ancestors and other Seiberts. Very promisingly, he
indicated that his grandfather Jacob had had a brother named "Balsy" - who might have been my ancestor "Balthasar" AKA "Balser". Unfortunately, and in fact very confusingly, he said that this "Balsy" had only had 2 sons, Louis and Leopold, and no daughters (when in fact my Balthasar Seibert had
only 3 daughters, Elizabeth, Kate, and Mary). (For this reason, 30 years went by after 1972, in which I was not at all convinced that Alvin Seibert and I were related at all.) He completed his account of his branch of the Seiberts - impressing me very much, incidentally, with the clearness of his recall of most of the information he remembered - stating even the names of most of the children of Louis and Leopold, as well as where Anton, Louis, and Leopold lived (near Mascoutah, Illinois). It was clear
he was speaking of definite people, and of relatives. Unfortunately, it seemed that his Jacob Seibert might be a different person from the one related to me. A few months ago, I made contact with Ms. Sherry Mitchell, online, who grew up in Du Quoin and is also descended from the same Jacob Seibert as Alvin Seibert - who she knows to be "my" Jacob Seibert of Birkenhoerdt. Thus she proved the connection of my Seiberts to those of Alvin Seibert - and simultaneously validated his stories about Louis and Leopold Seibert, etc. The problem for me switched from trying to determine whether Alvin
was related to me or not, to figuring out how his at first contradictory stories of "Balsy with two sons" could be made to fit the real facts. At this point I made a "leap of faith" and guessed, with great luck, that Anton Seibert of Birkenhoerdt might have been the father of the Louis and Leopold Seibert mentioned by Alvin Seibert, rather than "Balsy". Starting from this hypothesis, I have since been able to convincingly substantiate this hypothesis. Online searches almost immediately turned up and 1860 and 1870 census records for Anton Seibert, living with his THREE sons Jacob, Louis, and
Leopold, and wife Katherine Nebo. I also discovered the marriage record of 1855 for one "Anthony Seibert" and "Katherine Nebo". Moreover, I discovered a reference to Anton's early death in 1873, at age 46. (I believe that it is because of Anton's very early disappearance in contrast
to his brothers, each of whom died 20 to almost 30 years later, that Alvin
Seibert had no recollection of Anton Seibert.) The above information sufficed and suffices in my mind to make a compelling case for the Anton Seibert of Belleville, father of Jacob, Louis, and Leopold, having been the same person as Anton Seibert of Birkenhoerdt. As indicated above, I have diligently sought after absolute proof of their identity - have, for instance, tried all avenues to find the birth date of the Anton Seibert who died in Belleville in 1873, with no luck. His age at the time of death, however, was 46 - which is consistent with the known date of birth for the Anton Seibert of Birkenhoerdt (1827), even though this does not suffice to PROVE the two men were the same Anton Seibert. I have gone on to fairly well trace the offspring of Anton Seibert. Anton's death record at the Mascoutah Illinois old "Holy Infant Childhood Church" shows his wife's name to have been "Katherine Newa" (note spelling, in contrast to the "Nebo" spelling in their 1855 marriage record). Son Jacob Seibert died in 1878, and is buried in the same Mascoutah Old Holy Infant Childhood Cemetery as Anton (they are the only
two Seiberts in that cemetery). Jacob is identified as having been the son of Anton Seibert and Katherine Newa (I know there are 2-3 documented appearances of the spelling "Newa", and only one of "Nebo" as in the 1855 marriage). Anton's widow Katherine Newa Seibert remarried to one August Rother in the Mascoutah area before the end of the same year that Anton died. In the census of 1880, they are listed as Katherine and August Rother, and Louis and Leopold are living with them, listed as "step-sons" of August Rother. Leopold never married. Louis married and had various children, most of
whose names I had already received, amazingly, from Alvin Seibert. And so on. I look forward to sharing with you all information I have been able to discover about Anton Seibert and his descendants, and on my line (through brother Balthasar Seibert) as well, very soon. Note additionally concerning Anton Seibert's wife, Katherine Newa, that there are other people named Newa living in the Mascoutah area in the late 1800's. I am convinced that they are of the same family, although I have no proof. I speculate that Anton and Katherine Newa lived in the Mascoutah area because of her family ties there - while Jacob and Balthasar Seibert both spent most of their lives in the Du Quoin area. (Immediate
descendants of Anton Seibert lived not only in the area of Mascoutah, which is in St. Clair County, Illinois, but in adjacent "New Baden", which is in Clinton County, Illinois.) Again, I will provide more complete information about all these folks and a lot more in the very near future. Right now, however, I am all too keenly aware, at the moment, of the very "tenuous existence" of my identification of Anton Seibert in Mascoutah as the same Anton Seibert from Birkenhoerdt. A little diversification of this knowledge, which may be uniue and unreproducible, makes me feel a little better! :)
Thank you, as before, for all the hard work you are doing. It is greatly - greatly - appreciated.
My best to you and Ursula. I hope your summer weather is beautiful. With a
lot of luck, I may have the opportunity to spend a fair amount of time in
Germany next summer. I can't wait!
    All the best,
    Robert Donnell

Elisabeth married Henry H. Huntley (b. 1841 in Ohio) in DuQuoin, IL on July 31, 1865. The couple moved to Union City, TN where their first child, Emma, was born 1/ 5/ 1867. (Note that the name of Balthasar and Margaret Seibert's deceased daughter, Emma, was given to the first child born to Elisabeth Huntley.) The Huntleys moved to Caruthersville, MO in c. 1870, where the other Huntley children were born (two died in infancy). Others born include: Wm. Henry, 3/ 14/ 1872; Chas. Claiborne, 9/ 19/ 1878; Clara Belle, Mar 7, 1880; Elizabeth, 12/ 4/ 1883; Almore Seibert, 2/ 18/ 1885. The Seibert parents came from Belleville to Caruthersville to live with their daughter in c. 1889. Margaret Seibert d. approx. 1891. Henry H. Huntley died Oct. 31, 1892. From that date until his death in on Feb. 9, 1901, Balthasar Seibert was the patriarch of the Seibert- Huntley family in Caruthersville. Both Margaret Seibert and Balthasar Seibert were buried in the Catholic Cemeteries in Caruthersville. Elisabeth Seibert Huntley d. April 21, 1916 and was buried in Caruthersville. Death Certificate for Elizabeth Seibert Huntley, d. April 22, 1916: Date of Birth: Nov. 15th, 1856 [this is an error; should read "1846", which is proven by the age at death, which follows:] Age [at death]: 69 years 5 months 7 days Birthplace: Germany Name of Father: Balser Seibert [should be "Balthasar Seibert"] Maiden Name of Mother: Don't know Informant: A. S. Huntley [this was her youngest son, Almore Seibert Huntley, then living at home with his widowed mother] Date of Death: April 22, 1916 Place of Burial or removal: Little Prairie Cemetery Date of Burial: April 23, 1916 OBITUARY:
Obituary for Elizabeth Seibert Huntley, from the Caruthersville "Twice-A-Week Democrat" of April 25, 1916, p. 2 Mrs. Elizabeth Huntley passed away suddenly at her home on Ward Avenue at an early hour Saturday morning. She leaves three sons, William, Charles and Almore, and three daughters, Mrs. Emma Powell, Mrs. Del Longgrear of Farmington and Mrs. James McDaniel [this is an error; should read "Mrs. James McDonald"] of Cape Girardeau. She also leaves twenty grandchildren. Mrs. Huntley was 69 years of age and had resided in Caruthersville many years, where she was loved by those who knew her best, and respected by all. The funeral service was conducted at the late residence at 1:30 Sunday by Rev. Setzer of the Baptist church, her own pastor, Rev. Orear being out of the city. The bereaved ones have the sympathy of a large circle of friends. Obituary for Elizabeth Seibert Huntley, from the Caruthersville "Pemiscot Argus" of April 27, 1916, p. 4 Mrs. Elizabeth Huntley died quite suddenly at her home in this city early Saturday morning, April 22 of heart disease. She had retired the previous evening in apparently her usual health, but, about 3:30, called her son, Almore. Before he could summon Mrs. Tistadt, next door, to her assistance, she had passed away. Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 Sunday afternoon by Rev. W. H. Setzer, of the Baptist Church, who officiated in the absence of the Methodist minister, following which she was laid to rest in Little Prairie Cemetery. Mrs. Huntley was a native of Germany, having been born there November 15, 1856 [this is an error, copied directly from the death certificate, it appears; the correct date should read "November 15, 1846" - although this was the date of christening, not the birth date, according to records of the Catholic Church in Birkenhoerdt], and being 69 years, 5 months and 17 days old. She came to the United States when she was quite small. At Duquoin [should read "DuQuoin"], Ill.,in July, 1865, she was united in marriage to Henry H. Huntley of which union six children yet survive, Charlie, Will and Almore, sons, and Mrs. Emma Powell, Mrs. Del Longrear of Bismarck and Mrs. J. T. McDonald of Cape Girardeau, daughters. Mr. and Mrs. Huntley came to Caruthersville about 1870, she having lived here forty-six years. She had been a faithful member of the Methodist Church for forty-five years and was well known as a sincere Christian and a devoted mother. Her loss will be felt not only by her children and grandchildren, but by her many friends, to all of whom we extend our sincere sympathy.

    SEIBERT LEOPOLD M/W Y-72 0044536 1935-10-27 ST CLAIR BELLEVILLE - -

BIOGRAPHY: Wow, Recs! You just made my day! I had been afraid I might be terribly
boring you both, and to get such a nice, interested response was really
more than I hoped for. I have a good deal more information which I look
forward to getting to you in the next few weeks, I think: This exchange
will serve to motivate me to write up my notes on the descendants of Anton
I have detected. It will be good to compare what I've found to what you
and Ursula have been able to put together on him and his, too.
I have been terribly frustrated that no documentation can be found to
prove the exact date of birth of the Anton Seibert who married Katherine
Newa (I believe she was a Catherine; that may need checking) in St. Clair
County Illinois. I have, for the record, seen a photocopy of his death
certificate; and I have seen his church burial record (which also lists
his wife as Catherine or Katherine Newa), and there is no indication of
his exact date of birth. And I believe I have taken other steps to finding
and identifying same, with no luck to date. The only remaining step that
can be taken, perhaps, is to see if there is any existing paper trace
concerning his 1855 marriage. That would be a promising lead, if only the
date in question were more recent than 1855. I promise, regardless, to get
that information, if it exists. If you wish to see copies of the
documentation I am receiving, would be happy to send that to you,
    obviously.
A few interesting anecdotes about Anton's son Leopold:
    - I was told by Alvin Seibert that Leopold did not marry. It is definite
that he left no children and was not married for many years, at the very
least, at the time of his death in the 1930's. However, amazingly there is
some indication he may have been married briefly as a very young man. It
may have been a very brief, one-time occurrence in his life, which, after
many decades as a batchelor, was almost forgotten late in life: He is
listed as a "batchelor" in his final census records...
    - Alvin and his daughter, Mrs. Louis Fletcher, in Du Quoin in 1972,
referred to Anton's son "Leopold" not as "LEE-OH-POLD", as a good American
would, but as "LAY-POLD". The obvious original German pronunciation was
clear, and that was "pleasing", after so many years.
    - Leopold's 1920 cenus (I believe it was) inquires as to whether he is
able to read and write. Amazingly, his reply is in the affirmative - and
he specifies that he does so in GERMAN! I was amazed at that point. A man
who was born around 1860, in the U.S., and lived his entire life in
Illinois - speaking German. That part of Illinois has been extremely
German, to put it mildly. In the early 1970's I attended some
"Strassenfests" in St. Clair County, where people came in from the farms
and sat around big tables, and listened to family members regaling them in
absolutely fluent German. Even today no doubt there are still people who
    speak German.
    - Leopold's death was a tragedy: In the 1930's, he had apparently rented
out his farm, after his own retirement, to a friend or neighbor. He -
Leopold - went out onto the farm one night, however, to investigate some
suspicious goings-on. They may have been having problems with thefts of
corn. At any rate, he apparently surprised the individual who was stealing
the corn, and that individual fired a shotgun into him - just hitting him
in the back or arm, etc., a non-life threatening wound under normal
circumstances. Leopold went to a local hospital and was recovering very
well and in good spirits - when he died suddenly, of lead poisoning (if I
remember carefully) from pellets which had not been removed. (I have the
newspaper article, and will try to send it to you.)
While I am gabbing, a couple other interesting stories come to mind:
    - Katherine Newa was German-speaking (obviously, given her choice of two
Germans as husbands), but had been born in Lorraine, France. She also was
illiterate - as evidenced in her making only a "mark" (an "X") on the
death certificate of her first husband.
    - I have received photocopies (horrible quality, unfortunately) of the
actual papers filed in the probate settlement for Anton Seibert's estate
(such as it was; there wasn't much to it). The papers give a wonderful
view into his whole way of life and daily activities, because every item
he owned that had any value was listed, and they were the absolute
minimum, just one table, one bed, minimal farming equipment, etc. It
makes marvelously interesting reading. Additionally, the papers include
bills for physicians' assistance during approximately a 6 month period,
leading up to his death. He obviously had taken ill with something, and
though only 42 years of age, was unable to recover. The medicines which he
was received, and which his estate had to pay for posthumously, were
obviously quack medications. His end was not only premature, but very
    miserable...
    - Anton died on April 22, 1873 (I hope I have the year of his death
correct here) - on the anniversary of his wedding to Katherine Newa. She
went on to marry before the end of the year - presumably because she was
totally broke and in dire straits, since she still had three young boys at
that point. I know little about August Rother, other than that he was a
    "Prussian".
I do not know what value these stories will be to you, and I do need to
confirm some of the dates in them (written off the top of my head). I
thought you might enjoy hearing them, though, in anticipation of receiving
more from me in the near future.
