KEWANEE - Gladys I. Thurwanger, 82, of Kewanee, died at 2:10 AM, Saturday, August 8, 2009 at Kewanee Hospital.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, August 12 at 10 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Kewanee. Rev. James Pallardy will officiate. Visitation will be held from 6-8 PM, Tuesday, August 11 at Rux Funeral Home in Kewanee with a rosary to be recited at 5:30 PM. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Kewanee Hospital Hospice, the Windmont Park Lighting Fund or the Kewanee Senior Citizens Center.
She was born on November 10, 1926 in Kewanee, the daughter of Michael and Henrietta (Trent) George. She married Donald E. Thurwanger on April 21, 1945 in San Diego, CA. He preceded her in death on August 16, 2002. She was also preceded by her parents and a son-in-law, James VanHyfte. She is survived by 2 sons, Daniel (Cheryl) Thurwanger of Fort Worth, TX and Douglas (Missy) Thurwanger of Wichita, KS, 2 daughters, Patricia VanHyfte of Kewanee, and Cheryl (Jim) Powell of Kewanee, 5 grandchildren, Angela (Dr. Chris) Ryan, Dr. Rebecca (Brooks) Rees, Adam James Powell and Matthew and Mark Thurwanger, 3 great-grandchildren, a sister, Vera (Lawrence) Mohnen of Branson, MO and a brother, Ernest (Shirley) George of Springfield, MO.
Gladys graduated from Wethersfield High School in 1944. Prior to her marriage, she had worked as a telephone operator and at Novak?s Cleaning. She had worked as a nurses aid at St. Francis Hospital in Kewanee and Leisure Hills Nursing Home before retiring in 1980. Gladys was also an election judge for 27 years. She was also a member of the Senior Citizens Center and had been a volunteer at the Kewanee Hospital Gift Shop and at the surgery waiting area. She also enjoyed making baby stocking caps for the hospital and she also enjoyed making greeting cards from her computer. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and enjoyed quilting, knitting, sewing, baking and her family.
