James Joseph Ellert, 92, St. Clair, formerly of Carpinteria, Calif., passed away Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2013, at his home, surrounded by the love of his family.
James, son of the late Joseph Herman Ellert and wife Clara Cecilia, nee Wetoskey, was born March 18, 1921, in Ashley, Ind. He was united in marriage to Doreen Wilson Nov. 18, 1945, and three children came to bless this union.
James was a Christian and member of St. Clare Catholic Church, St. Clair. He was proud to have served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, entering July 24, 1942, and receiving his discharge Oct. 20, 1945. During his working career, James was employed as an electrician by various contractors. He was a proud, 55-year member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 413, Santa Barbara County, Calif. James also was a member of American Legion Post 347, and Knights of Columbus, Bishop Leo John Steck Council 4667, both of St. Clair. When living in Carpinteria, Calif., he rekindled his interest in farming, primarily livestock farming. James was a local leader of the 4-H Club for 11 years. He loved to do woodworking and go fishing, and was especially proud of his restored Model A Ford. What meant most to James was time spent with his family. The love they shared and many precious memories they created will forever live in their hearts.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Herman and Clara Cecilia Ellert; four brothers, Clayton Ellert, Leonard Ellert, Jerome Ellert and infant Edward Ellert; and two sisters, Irene Ellert and Marie Blomeke.
He is survived by his wife, Doreen Ellert, St. Clair; three children, Laura Ellert and friend Richard Austin, Sumner, Wash., Maureen Bartram and husband Bruce, and Jim Ellert and wife Erlene, all of St. Clair; two brothers, Carl Ellert, and Ben Ellert and wife Beverly, all of Auburn, Ind.; four sisters, Bertha Cox, Elkhart, Ind., Rita Roark and husband Norman, Auburn, Ind., Theresa Stanley, Goleta, Calif., and Barbara Bounds, Goleta, Calif.; one sister-in-law, Velma Ellert, Ashley, Ind.; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; great- and great-great-nieces and -nephews; cousins; other relatives and many friends.
Visitation was held from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, at Russell Colonial Funeral Home, St. Clair. A rosary service was held at 5:30 p.m.
A private committal will take place at a later date.
Memorials may be given to Honor Flight.
The Ellert family was served by Russell Colonial Funeral Home, St. Clair.
