Rita M. Higgins, 77, a former elementary school teacher, nurse, craft-shop owner and past president of the Chicago Woman's Club, died Tuesday, Aug. 14, in her home in Chicago Ridge of kidney cancer. Mrs. Higgins was a 1945 graduate of the St. Xavier College/Mercy Hospital nursing program. She married Leonard Higgins in 1949. Mrs. Higgins worked as a nurse for about 10 years at Little Company of Mary Hospital and Health Care Centers in Evergreen Park and then began a 15-year teaching career, retiring about 1970. Mrs. Higgins opened a craft store at 95th Street and Western Avenue in Evergreen Park after she retired, then opened a second store in Tinley Park three years later. The stores operated for about 10 years. Mrs. Higgins served as president of the Chicago Woman's Club from 1993 to 1996. "My mother was a leader in all that she did," said her son Thomas. "Up until the time she died, she was always teaching and being a nurse and helping people." In addition to her son, other survivors include four daughters, Mary, Kathleen Ory, Laureen and Margaret Peterson; four other sons, Patrick, Timothy, Donald and Daniel; three sisters, Mary Lois Michielsen, Joan Bernier and Elaine Little; a brother, Donald Doemling; and nine grandchildren. Services have been held.
