Charles S. Mc Millan, 78
NEW CASTLE - Charles S. Mc Millan, age 78, of New Castle, died Friday, July 9, 2004 in The Waters of New Castle following an extended illness. He was born on June 1, 1926 in New Castle, a son of the late George and Connie (Hudson) Mc Millan.
A 1944 graduate of New Castle High School, he was a three year varsity basketball player. He led the Trojans to the first North Central Conference Championship in 1943-44, while the team was ranked No. 1 in the state. He joined the U. S. Marine Corps immediately following graduation during World War II, and was wounded in action at Iwo Jima, for which he earned a purple heart. After the war, he returned to play basketball at Tulane and Valparaiso Universities. After graduation, he worked at Chrysler Corporation for a number of years, he also operated a Gulf Service Station in New Castle. He retired from the Pendleton Reformatory after many years as a warehouse supervisor. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #137, the BPOE # 484, and attended the Grace Baptist Church in New Castle.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years: Betty L. Mc Millan of New Castle; three daughters: Cinda Kennedy of New Castle; Lisa Moreland of New Castle, and Julie (husband: Mark) Jasper of New Castle; a son: Mark McMillan of New Castle; six grandchildren: Ryan Brown, Sarah Sexton, Danielle Sutherlin, Ross Edwards, Michelle Russell, Hannah Cochran, three great grandchildren: Caleb Hoots, Killian Sutherlin and Xander Sutherlin; one sister: Thelma Lightfoot of Pitman, NJ; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter: Sandra J. Edwards; three brothers: Oral, Herbert, and Lloyd McMillan; and two sisters: Nina Derbyshire and Julia Riley.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 15, 2004 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service with the Reverend Denny Neal officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Summit Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 14, 2004 at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be given to the American Diabetes Research Foundation with envelopes available at the funeral home.
