Cedarburg - Emmett J. Doerr Sr.,who along with his brothers owned Doerr Electric on a street named after the company here, died Thursday from complications of a stroke at the age of 90.
Doerr and brothers, Lee and Edwin, moved the family's electric motor company to Cedarburg in the mid-1940s. The business was started in St. Louis in 1940.
W.W. Grainger of Chicago purchased the business in 1969 which later became Emerson Electric. The company no longer is operating on Doerr Way, off Pioneer Road.
Besides being an industrialist, Doerr was known for his philanthropy, having donated money to the Boy Scouts of America and several Catholic schools, including Marquette University, Dominican High School and St. Louis University.
Doerr of Fox Point died at the family compound in Michigan.
He is survived by sons Emmett Jr. of Mequon; Emil of Chilton, Wis.; Thomas and John of Nashville; and two daughters, Elizabeth Doerr-Wells of San Francisco and Mary Ellen Ceverha of Dallas.
Funeral services were scheduled today at 10 a.m. at St. Eugene Catholic Church in Fox Point.
Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery on Donges Bay Road in Mequon.
