Melvin G. ?Mel? Ehrstein, 76, of Belleville, IL, born June 18, 1940, in Belleville, IL, died Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at his residence.
Mr. Ehrstein spent his life as a farmer. He was a member of the Heartland Mutual Insurance Company board of directors. He was a great source of family geneology. Mel was a proud U.S. Army veteran and a member of the Society of the Third Infantry and the Division of the Seventh Cavalry Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Linda, nee Roos, Ehrstein; a sister, Marjorie (Anthony J. ?Andy?) Hankammer; a brother, Charles Ehrstein; and a sister-in-law, Helen Ehrstein.
Surviving are one brother, Robert Ehrstein of Belleville, IL;
nieces and nephews, David (Sandy) Hankammer of Millstadt, IL,
Anthony ?Tony? Hankammer of Belleville, IL,
Diane Hankammer of Waterloo, IL,
Richard (Kim) Hankammer of Belleville, IL,
Jean (Jan) Waniel of Calvert City, KY,
Karen Niederbrach of Red Bud, IL,
and Paul Hankammer (Lori Martin) of Belleville, IL;
numerous great-nieces and great-nephews;
and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

Funeral: Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 31, 2017, at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, IL, with Father Elmar Mauer, OMI, officiating.
Burial with military honors will be at Green Mount Catholic Cemetery, Belleville, IL.
