Stephen A. Walter, 75, died Thursday at Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services. He was a native of Floyd County, a retired technician for the Indiana Soil Conservation Service, a Marine veteran of World War II, a member of Knights of St. John of Lanesville and a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in New Albany. Survivors include his wife, the former Leona Fessel; four sons, Richard Walter of Jacksonville, Fla., Charles Walter of Muncie, Kevin Walter of New Trenton and Edward Walter of Burlington, Ky.; six daughters, Bernadine Walter of Albany, Pamela Wurmeuth of Blechetown, Mass., Laura Selby of Rockville, Margaret Walter of Hudson, N. H., Susan Wilson of Cicero and Annette Smith of Covington, Ky.; three stepsons, Larry and Stephen Kochert, both of New Albany, and Robert Kochert of Columbus; two stepdaughters, Margaret Kochert of New Albany and Jane Timberlake of Corydon; four brothers, Irvin Walter of Milltown, and John A., Jude and Patrick Walter; five sisters, Leola Braun of Jeffersonville, Mary Lou Bacon of Portland, Ore., Rose Brown of Kent, Ohio, Roberta Garrett of Corydon and Frances Hess; 26 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Services are 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lanesville with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and after 8 a.m. tomorrow at Gehlbach & Royse Funeral Home in Corydon.

Stephen A. Walter, 75, Lanesville, died at 2:55 a.m. Thursday at Floyd Memorial Hospital in New Albany after being injured in an auto accident near New Salisbury on July 31. He was a native of Lanesville, born Sept. 23, 1919, the son of the late Herman L. and Edith C. Benson Walter. He was a retired technician for the Indiana Soil Conservation Service, a farmer, a Marine veteran of World War II and a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in New Albany, the Knights of St. John and the Over Sixties at St. Mary in Lanesville. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Louise Stilger Walter, and a son Gerald Louis Walter. The funeral was Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lanesville with burial in the church cemetery. Fathers Harold Ripperger and John Fink officiated. Gehlbach & Royse Funeral Home handled the arrangements. A rosary was prayed Sunday at the funeral home. Pallbearers were Jimmy, Bobby and Brian Walter, Bobby Stilger and Tommy and Mike Ruckriegel.
