OBITUARY - Thelma M. Schaub

TRAVERSE CITY ? Thelma M. Schaub, 86, of Traverse City, died Thursday evening, Feb. 12, 2009, at Munson Hospice House, surrounded and comforted by her loving family.
Born Jan. 13, 1923, in Lake Leelanau, she was the daughter of the late Leon J. and Edith M. (Belanger) Couturier. On Sept. 12, 1939, in Traverse City, she married Celestine G. Schaub.
Thelma was a very devoted Catholic and a longtime member of St. Francis Catholic Church. She had a beautiful Christian life, full of sunshine and cheer, dispensing comfort and consolation wherever she went.
She enjoyed gardening and the countless hours volunteering at the Carmelite Monastery.
The joy she inspired in her large family will live on and multiply by her example for years to come. Thelma will be fondly remembered for her kind and gentle ways. She will be sorely missed.
She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Celestine G. Schaub of Traverse City; 18 children, Gale (Ann) Schaub of Traverse City, Ruth (Kenneth) Welch of Traverse City, Richard (Isolde) Schaub of Traverse City, Raymond (Janice) Schaub of Leesburg, Fla., John (Ruth) Schaub of Buckley, Gerald (Janice) Schaub of Traverse City, Celestine (Joan) Schaub Jr. of St. Johns, Celeste Schaub of Bushnell, Fla., Theodore (Vicki) Schaub, DVM, of Mt. Morris, Phyllis (William) Clark of Marshall, Anthony (Angie) Schaub of Traverse City, Michael Schaub of Traverse City, Ivan Schaub of Traverse City, Janet Murphy of Traverse City, Eugene (Kay) Schaub of Traverse City, Timothy (Lisa) Schaub of Traverse City, Duane (Vickie) Schaub of Traverse City and Sidney (Cindy) Schaub of Traverse City; 82 grandchildren; 96 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren; eights siblings, Mary Bugai of Traverse City, Audrey Bugai of Cedar, Jackie Tooley of Traverse City, Carol (William) Kahle of Isanti, Minn., Edith (Benjamin) Zimmerman of Roscommon, Patricia (James) Otto of Traverse City, Carl (Anna) Couturier and Michael (Von) Couturier of Orlando, Fla.
In addition to her parents, Thelma was preceded in death by nine grandchildren; three sisters, Judy Howard, Orpha Taylor and Geraldine Moldenhauer; and a brother, Robert Couturier.
Friends may call at St. Francis Catholic Church on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009, from 7 to 9 p.m., where the Schaub family will receive friends. Vigil services will be held at 8 p.m. A funeral Mass will be offered at St. Francis Catholic Church on Monday, Feb. 16, 2009, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Kenneth Stachnik will serve as the celebrant. Burial will take place at Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Carmelite Monastery or to the charity of one's choice. Envelopes may be obtained at the funeral home or church.
