RAYMOND 'RAY' BROWN
Raymond "Ray" Brown, 88, Ottawa, died Thursday, June 22, 2006, at Ransom Memorial Hospital. A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Highland Cemetery.
He was born Dec. 30, 1917, to E.R. Brown and Lena M. (Wells) Bennett at Falls City, Neb. He graduated from Baldwin High School in 1936.
He married Mary Fyock Feb. 4, 1940, at Baldwin City. She survives.
He was a rifle sharpshooter in the U.S. Marine Corps from June 1945 to April 1946, serving as a private first class.
He lived in Franklin County most of his life, living in Ottawa since 1966. He also lived in Paola, Overbrook, Emporia, Osawatomie, Clinton, Mo., and Harrisonville, Mo.
For much of his career, he was associated with the Lester Moore GM dealerships in Kansas and Missouri. From 1967 to 1971, he was a pilot for LeMaster Aerial Spraying. From 1971 to 1978, he owned and operated Ray Brown Ford, retiring in 1980.
He was a member of Emporia Methodist Church, a 50-year member of Ottawa Lodge No. 18 AF&AM, and a 45-year member of Ottawa Lodge No. 803, Benevolent Order of Elks.
Survivors also include a son, Raymond James "Jim" Brown, Lafayette, Calif.; three daughters, Glenene Marie Brown, Winchester, Va., Sheryl Ann Crawford, Ottawa, and Kristie Lynn Jessop, Sulphur, Okla.; three sisters, Gladys "Peg" Viertl, Winter Haven, Fla., Gladys Devlin, Chevy Chase, Md., and Lucille Ames, Dallas; two brothers, Harold Bennett, Ottawa, and Francis Bennett, Williamsburg; a sister, Betty Schuh, Topeka; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Alice Killgore.
Visitors may pay their respects after 3 p.m. Sunday at Dengel & Son Mortuary, where the family will meet visitors from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Monday. The casket will remained closed.
