Frank Gartner
Frank Pius Gartner, 90, Bismarck, MN formerly of St. Anthony, MN,died Aug. 1, 2004, at a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Revs. Albert Leary and John Kuhn officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at the St. Anthony Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a St. Anthony Verein/St. Peter and Paul Verein rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m., and a parish vigil will be held at 8 p.m. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to services at the church.
Frank was born Feb. 12, 1914, at Glen Ullin, MN,the son of Michael and Celestina (Steiner) Gartner. He attended rural school southwest of Glen Ullin. Being the oldest of nine children, he helped his mother farm and raise his brothers and sisters after the death of his father in August 1930. On Nov. 7, 1939, he married Elizabeth Leingang at St. Anthony. Frank and Elizabeth farmed southwest of Glen Ullin before moving to a farm southwest of Mandan where they lived until 1955, when they moved to a farm west of St. Anthony. They retired from farming in 1972 and built a home in St. Anthony. Frank and Elizabeth were married 59 years and were devoted to farming and raising their five children. Elizabeth died Oct. 21, 1998. Frank had been a resident at The Terrace in Bismarck until his recent illness.
Frank enjoyed listening to old-time and country music, and he played the guitar in his younger years. He loved to dance, especially waltzes, polkas and the schottische. He enjoyed visiting with people, acquaintances as well as strangers. He was usually seen wearing a cowboy hat.
He was an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus, Brotherhood of St. Antonius Society, St. Peter and Paul Verein of Fallon, Fraternal Order of Eagles and Loyal Order of the Moose.
Frank is survived by three sons and four daughters-in-law, Franklin and Leona, St. Anthony, Justin and Pam, Highlands Ranch, Colo., Michael and Suzette, Mandan, and Helen Gartner, Bismarck; one daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Larry Chesak, Bismarck; 14 grandchildren, Marie Nelson, Debbie Kramer, Melissa Mees, Lisa Quradnik and Shannon Gartner, all of Bismarck, Carol Lanich and Sheri Gartner, both of Mandan, Jason Gartner, Parker, Colo., Jameson Gartner, Johnstown, Colo., Tom Gartner and Joe Gartner, both of St. Anthony, JoAnn Humann, Linton, Jennifer Chesak, Chicago, and Cory Gartner, Las Vegas; 15 great-grandchildren; one brother and five sisters-in-law, Al and Laura Gartner and Bernice Gartner, all of Glen Ullin, Betty Leingang and Clementine Steckler, both of Mandan, and Pat Gartner, California; one sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Gordon Anderson, Dallas, Ore.; numerous nieces and nephews; and his friends at Liberty Heights, Mandan, and at The Terrace, Bismarck.
Frank was preceded in death by his wife; his son, David, on Jan. 1, 1999; his parents; three brothers, Joe, Edward and Johnny; and three sisters, Minnie Duppong, Agatha Miller and Katherine Milliron.
