"Crash" HETHERLY dies at 76
BATAVIA----Eugene "Crash" HETHERLY, legend in western New York aviation circles, has died at age 76. HETHERLY was a mechanic at Bell Aircraft who later became a pilot and flew everything from cropdusters to military planes to helecopters. He flew search-and-rescue missions for the Genesee County Sheriff's Department and was part of the mapping team that surveyed the orginal New York State Thruway route. In 1973, HETHERLY was one of 59 pilots honored by the Helicopter Association of America. His co-workers at Bell Aircraft gave him the ironic name "Crash" because he never had a mishap while flying. HETHERLY, who had lung cancer, died Sunday at the Batavia Nursing Home. He is survived by his daughter, and also a brother and several nieces and nephews.
