According to Agnes Burkhard Baker, "When Amy was educated high enough to teach school she had to go on horseback to Bethesda and when she came back she had a two-year certificate to teach school. She was a school teacher and, well, she wasn?t no housekeeper."
From The Zanesville Times Recorder, 6 May 1950:
Miss Evalene Burkhard of 545 Glendale avenue, and her sisters, Mrs.
Carl Himmelspach and Mrs. E.J. Pepper, both of Barnesville, and Mrs.
Dorothy Denner of Cantonhave returned to their homes after spending a
few days in New York City.
Amy Pfeffer Burkhard's obituary appeared in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 31 Oct 1966:
Mrs. Amy E. Pffeffer, 77, of Quaker City Route 4 died at 11 a.m. Sunday (Oct. 30)
at Good Samaritan Hospital following a long illness. Born Aug. 31, 1889 in Ozark, she
was a daughter of David and Caroline Burkhard. Her husband, E. J. Pfeffer, died in 1963.
She was a member of Temperanceville St. Mary's Catholic Church ant its Catholic
Women's Club.
Surviving are a son, Joseph of Escondido, Calif; two daughters, Mrs. Madeline
Schumaker of Woodsfield and Mrs. Caroline Reischman of Quaker City Route 4; six
sisters, Mrs. Agnes Baker 545 Glendale avenue, Mrs. N. J. (Genevieve) Malone 1036
Eastman street, Miss Evelene Burkhard of 920 Locust avenue, Mrs. Dorothy Danner
of Canton, Mrs. Margaret Himmelspach of Barnesville Route 2 and Mrs. Justina Fenton
of San Diego Calif.; three brothers, Julius D. Burkhard of 1133 Seborn avenue, A. W.
Burkhard of 2015 Neil avenue and Raymond of Canton; 20 grandchildren; 19 great-
grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Two sons are deceased.
The body was taken to Campbell Funeral Home in Barnesville where friends may call
after 7 p.m. today. The Catholic Women's Club will hold services at 8:15 p.m. Tuesday.
Rosary will be recited at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. Services will be held at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's
Catholic Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
