CATHERINE RITA (ZWICK) LAWRENCE (1917 - 2017)
Catherine Rita (Zwick) Lawrence, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, wife, friend passed away peacefully on Thursday afternoon, December 7 at The Laurels of Massillon. She was born on a snowy, wintry day three days before Christmas, December 22, 1917 on a farm just north of Louisville, Ohio. Born fourth of nine children to Mike and Tillie (Kress) Zwick, she was bundled up the following morning, taken by horse and buggy to be baptized at the Catholic Church at Maximo, Ohio.
Catherine's Legacy: Her deep and abiding love of family and of God. She led a simple life. In 1938 she met and was married to Carl Lawrence for many years but who died in 1987. Mom was so talented and enjoyed needlework, especially quilting which she learned at a young age from her Grandmother Magdalena Reischman Kress. For more than 25 years, Mom lead a group of ladies who quilted each Tuesday morning at St Joseph's Catholic Church in Canton, Ohio along with her cousin, Mary Schoeppner, Aunt Anna Wilhelm, her sister Florence Marshall, cousin Erdine Paumier Zwick, and many friends including Bea McCarel, a longtime neighbor and other acquaintances over the years. In addition, Mom was also gifted and enjoyed crocheting, knitting and sewing. She sewed our play clothes from feed bags which was the custom back then and school clothes and formals as well as we were growing up. always took an active part in our education as Room Mother, Girl Scout Leader, Band Boosters and whatever clubs and groups we were involved in.
Catherine enjoyed life - yearly get-togethers with her siblings especially our annual Family Reunions and airplane rides at her brother Joe's airport in Alliance, trips to Florida, New Mexico and Arizona to visit Joe & Phyllis, Mary & Al, Norman & Eva?. Oh how the Fun Bunch enjoyed being together!
In later years after selling our family home on 10th St SW in Canton, she moved to the Mayfield Manor where she enjoyed the companionship of many of her fellow residents - celebrating the Holidays and birthdays together, covered dishes and the like. Even taught a few ladies there to quilt! Treasured memories!
In June 2006 following a fall and shoulder surgery, she chose to go to The Laurels of Massillon to live in the Assisted Living wing. At The Laurels she constantly received excellent professional and loving care. Lots of TLC from the nurses and aides at the 200 Wing all these many years who became Family to each of us.
Mom has endured many crises over the years but has survived due to the loving care that everyone has provided her at The Laurels. We are sincerely grateful to each one of you for your many kindnesses and thoughtfulness each day of her life to keep Mom as comfortable as humanly possible until Our Lord and Savior called her Home to be with Him.
Catherine is survived by daughter Barbara Schwitzgebel (Earl), grandson Tom (Rosalind) Schwitzgebel, grand-daughters Gwen (Bart) Archinal and Beth Peterson, great-grandchildren Sean Schwitzgebel, Paige Archinal, Peyton Archinal; and daughter Sandra Walters of Reno NV, grandsons John Walters of San Jose CA, David Walters of Arlington WA, grand-daughter Carole Walters of San Jose CA, great-grandchildren Tom Blake, Trevor Blake and Dennis Cook; and one sister Mary Saunier of Rio Rancho NM. Preceded in death by siblings Magdalen Larson, Hilda Schaub, Margaret Rising, Florence Marshall, Theresa Eye, Norman Zwick, Joe Zwick. Mom has endured many crises over the years but has survived due to the loving care that everyone has provided her by the Laurels staff and the loving care by Crossroads Hospice as well who helped us and guided us through the most difficult times.
