- [S927] Obituary.
Ray L. Oertel, 85 of 1358 Thomas Place died at 7:35p.m. Sunday November 13th, 2011 at home. Friends may call from 4p.m. to 7p.m. Thursday November 17th at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd where services will be held at 7p.m with Pastor Penny Thomsen officiating. Committal services will be at 10:00a.m. Friday at Linwood Cemetery where military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post #6.
Ray was born on July 19, 1926 in Dubuque the son of Elmer and Alice (Sprague) Oertel. He is a US Navy Veteran serving during WWII. He married Phyllis "Gail" Gray on April 18, 1959 at St. John's Episcopal Church. She preceded him in death on June 17, 2008. He worked for Dubuque John Deere Tractor Works retiring in 1983, and was a member of the UAW Local #94. Ray loved to be outdoors, especially gardening and fishing and he also enjoyed doing woodworking.
He is survived by his children, Jeffrey (Connie) Oertel, Gregory (Janann) Oertel, and Melanie (Randy) Root all of Dubuque, nine grandchildren, Corinne, Lauren, Felicia, Andrew, Nathan, Joshua, Natalie, Jonathan, and Daniel and a great grandchild Tyler. Two sisters Jeanne Schmitt, of Durango, Alice Mae Krapfl of Decorah, and one brother Louis Oertell, of Potosi, WI.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Gail, two brothers Buddy and Clarence, brother-in-law Vesty Schmitt and sister-in-law Maxine Oertell.
The family wishes to thank all of Ray's family and friends especially Dave, Mary and Jeanne for all their love and support. Also to Hospice of Dubuque for all their wonderful care they gave to Ray.
