Village Saddened By Hines' Death
Never has Barnesville been more deeply saddened by a death than by the death on Monday afternoon at 5:40 of Charles W. Hines of 623 Wiley Avenue. Mr. Hines died at the Veterans' University Hospital in Pittsburgh where he had been a patient for 13 days.
Some time ago Mr. Hines gave to John Campbell of the Campbell Funeral Service, his wishes, in full for his funeral and these wishes are being observed by the family. The remains were brought to the Campbell Funeral Home, and friends were received after noon on Wednesday. Private funeral services will be held this Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. Byron B. Evans, D.D. of the Presbyterian Church, assisted by the Rev. Fred A. Shiltz of the First Methodist Church. Cremation will follow, and it was Mr. Hines' request that flowers be omitted and that his friends give this money to any worthy cause they should choose.
Mr. Hines was a son of George M. and Elizabeth Neuhardt Hines, and was born in Barnesville on February 16, 1899. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, and of the Rotary Club which he had served as secretary for 22 years. No one ever exemplified the Rotary motto, "Service above self” better than this member, who to many symbolized the heart of this service club. His weekly bulletin, with its wit and wisdom, was eagerly looked forward to.
He was a veteran of World War I, and in service suffered injuries which crippled him permanently. But no one ever heard him complain, and his cheerfulness was a wonderful tribute to his patriotism and courage. His great hobby was his work as a "ham" radio operator, which made him friends near and far.
He was preceded in death by his father, two sisters, Olga and Catherine, and one brother, Walter. His death bereaves his mother, of the home, three brothers, Stewart, James, and Lester, all of Barnesville, and one sister, Jeanne, a teacher in the Canton schools, besides countless friends.
