Subject: Richard L. Holzinger
Message: From the Huntington Herald Press Online, February 4, 2002 Richard L. Holzinger, 79, Fort Wayne, died at 10:15 a.m. Friday (Feb. 1, 2002) at his home. Mr. Holzinger, a former resident of Huntington, worked as a machine repairman for Dana Corp., retiring in 1986 after 27 years. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Fort Wayne. He served during World War II and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2689, where he also served as a past commander, and a member of American Legion Post 499, Fort Wayne. He also served as past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Fifth District. He was born Aug. 27, 1922, in Huntington to Joseph and Anna Wehr Holzinger. He graduated from Huntington Catholic High School in 1940. He married Joyce M. Steele on Feb. 15, 1946, at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. His wife survives. Also surviving are are a son, Larry A. Holzinger, Roanoke; a sister, Ann Moore, Midland, Mich.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Parker; a son, Richard Holzinger; three brothers, Paul Holzinger, John Holzinger and Joseph Holzinger; and seven sisters, Catherine Buck, Mary Cunningham, Clara Grice, Regina Miller, Rose Miles, Marie McCready and Dorothy Denzel. Calling is 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Monday at Hart Funeral Home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 840 Cherry St., with Father Ron Rieder officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Preferred memorials are to Parkview Hospice and Home Health Care, Fort Wayne, to Masses, or to the donor?s choice of charities, in care of Hart Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson St., Huntington, IN 46750.

Born in Huntington, Indiana, Mr. Holzinger entered the U.S. Army from Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana at age 20, serving during World War II in the New Guinea and Southern Philippines Campaigns, primarily with Company A, 865th Engineer Aviation Battalion.For his service he earned the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars, The Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star, the Army Good Conduct Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. He was a member of VFW Post 2689, Huntington, Indiana, where he served as a past commander, and a member of American Legion Post 499, Fort Wayne. He also served as a pastcommander of the VFW 5th District.
Mr. Holzinger and Joyce M. Steele were married on February 15, 1946. They had 3 children, 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
