OBITUARY:Christina Elkins
Christina (Buettner) Elkins, age 90, of Pinckneyville, (mother of Tina Marie Jenkel of Pinckneyville), died Saturday, January 10, 2004 at 1:25 a.m. in the Pinckneyville Community Hospital.
Christina was born near Pinckneyville in the area commonly known as 'Four Mile', a daughter of Jacob and Theresa (Hoffman) Epplin. She married Fred J. Buettner on August 7, 1934 in Pinckneyville and he preceded her in death on August 30, 1968. She then married Thomas O. Elkins on September 10, 1977 in Des Planes, Iowa and he preceded her in death on June 14, 1994.
During her lifetime she was a member of St. Bruno Catholic Church in Pinckneyville, a graduate of Pinckneyville Community High School, worked as a bookkeeper for C.N.A. Insurance for 28 years, a member of the Stitch and Chatter Quilting Club, the Catholic Daughters of America, the Hot Springs County Community Service League and the St. Bruno Quilters.
Survivors include four children, Rev. Frederick Jacob Buettner and wife Mary of Naperville, Tina Marie Jenkel and husband Jack Darrell of Pinckneyville, Edward J. Buettner and wife Barbara of Bradley and Ralph T. Buettner and wife Kim of O'Fallon, Mo.; three step-children, Thomas A. Elkins and wife Marge of Elk Grove Village, Terrence Elkins and wife JoAnn of Lockport and Trudy Wrzesinski and husband Henry of Midlothian; two sisters, Florence Eisfelder of Pinckneyville and Marcella Fontana of Du Quoin; 27 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and numerous other relatives and friends.
Christina was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; a sister, Hildegard Poe; three brothers, John, Jacob and Herman Epplin and a grandson, J.D. Jenkel.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 13 at 10 a.m. in St. Bruno Catholic Church with Fr. Brian Barker officiating. Interment was in St. Bruno Cemetery.
Friends called at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home, Pinckneyvillle, on Monday from 4 until 8 p.m. and on Tuesday from 8 until 9:30 a.m. The Rosary was said at the funeral home on Tuesday at 9 a.m.
Memorials may be made to the St. Bruno School Endowment Fund or the J.D. Jenkel Memorial Scholarship Fund.
