Birth: Oct. 22, 1868, Germany
Death: Aug. 8, 1945
Thayer County
Nebraska, USA
Otto Weiss, son of Joseph and Catharine Weiss, was born October 22, 1868 at Soltau, Germany. He was baptized in the Lutheran Church on Nov. 1, 1868 and confirmed in the Lutheran faith March 18, 1883.
Mr. Weiss came to Nebraska with his parents in 1886 and resided for a number of years near Waco. In 1893 he returned to Germany, where he was united in marriage with Marie Eggersgluss, and then the young couple returned to Waco where they made their home for ten years.
In 1903 they moved to Thayer County and resided on a farm near Kiowa which has been their home ever since and where they were privileged to celebrate their Golden Wedding
Anniversary two years ago.
This union was blessed with seven children: four sons and three daughters, two of whom prededed their father in death, Martin in 1906 and Dora, Mrs. Henry Schellhorn, in 1939.
Mr. Weiss was blessed by the Lord with a sound body and mind throughout a long life until July 21 of this year, when he was invalided by a severe stroke. A second stroke in the early morning hours of this past Wednesday, August 8, brought to a close his earthly life and he was called home by the Lord to life eternal at the age of 76 years, 9 months, and 16 days.
There remain to mourn their loss his aged widow, three sons: William of LaVerne, Calif., Carl of Carleton, Nebraska, and Henry of Central City, Nebraska; two daughters: Emma, Mrs.
Frank Poppe, of Deshler, Nebraska, and Edna, Mrs. William Finke, of Davenport, Nebraska; three sons-in-law, 31 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, besides many other mourning relatives and friends.
Services were held at the home and at Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Kiowa, with Pastor L. E. Vogel, of Davenport, officiating with words of comfort to the bereaved on Romans 6:23,
"The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is
eternal life in Jesus Christ, our Lord."
Several selections were sung by the Bethlehem Male Quartet at the home and church under the leadership of Mr. Paul Aufdemberge.
The mortal remains were laid to rest in Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery at Kiowa, where they await the final resurrection to eternal life.
"Blessed are the dead which die
in the Lord from henceforth; yea,
saith the Spirit, that they may
rest from their labors, and their
works do follow them". Rev. 14, 13.
