Gerold Mettler, age 75, of Menno, SD, passed away on Saturday, January 17, 2009 at the Menno-Olivet Care Center, Menno.
Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at Zion Reformed Church, Menno, with Rev. Scott Henry officiating. Burial will be in the Menno Cemetery. Visitations will be 9 AM-9 PM, Tuesday, January 21, 2009 at the Aisenbrey-Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home, Menno, SD. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Ron Mettler, Steven Mettler, Kent Mettler, Bruce Handle, Gary Pekas, Preston Mettler and David Mettler.
Gerold Christoph Mettler was born February 15, 1933 to Jacob F. and Magdalena (nee Mettler) Mettler on the family farm 4 miles north of Menno. He was baptized by Rev. Huenemann and confirmed by Rev. Korn in Zion Reformed Church.
Gerold graduated from Menno High School in 1951, with his twin brother Gordon. He attended Augustana College prior to serving in the U.S. Army from 1953 until being honorably discharged on September 15, 1955. When he returned, he attended S.D.S.U and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1959 with a degree in Animal Husbandry. He married Edra Stroschein on Nov. 23, 1958 and they moved on to the family farm North of Menno. They moved into Menno in 1963. Gerold and Edra were united in marriage until the time of her passing in 1982.
Gerold opened up Mettler Implement in 1963 and added Mettler Fertilizer in 1969. Over the years he was very involved in a variety of activities such as: Men's Community Choir, Church Choir, pulling hot rods, Menno Community Club, town baseball, and softball into his early 60's. He married Pat B. Zeeb in January 1984.
He was president of the Menno Pioneer Heritage Association from its inception. Gerold was an avid Hart Parr collector, restorer, and was involved with many old tractor clubs. He loved to go to threshing shows and old tractor exhibits. Gerold replicated the 'Boot Strap Test' and traveled to many shows to demonstrate it. A recent highlight was being featured in the Classic Tractor calendar of 2009.
Gerold loved life to the fullest! He enjoyed working outdoors at the Power Show site, on his Hart Parrs, and helping others. He will be greatly missed by family, friends, and numerous fellow collectors he met via old iron tractor groups.
On January 16, 2009, Gerold entered Menno Olivet Care Center, where he was called home by our Lord to his eternal home on January 17, 2009. Gerold was a member of Zion Reformed Church.
Gerold is survived by his three children and their families: Daniel (Robin) Mettler, children Jacob, Diedra, Sara, & MaryJo all of Menno; Jean (Richard) Wegelin, children Dustin and Mikayla Stephenson all of Scottsbluff, NE, Cassandra and Camilla Wegelin, Bridgeport, NE; and James (Mary) Mettler, child Macon Oplinger, all of Menno; one sister Cecilia Huenemann; three brothers: Raymond (Velma) Mettler; Calvin (Carol) Mettler; and twin brother Gordon (Pat A.) Mettler all of Menno; Brothers-in-Law Clifford Handel, Menno; and Vernon Pekas, Brandon, SD; Sister-In-Law Cynthia Stroschein, Marlboro, MA; and many nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edra; his parents; Sisters Elsie Herrboldt, Helena Handel, and Erna Tueting, and two young siblings, Richard and Hildegard.
