Obituary: Stephen J. MalterBorn November 13, 1926Died May 6, 2004PERKINSVILLE - Stephen J. Malter, 77, Perkinsville passed away Thursday, May 6, 2004, at Noyes Memorial Hospital, Dansville.Steve was born Nov. 13, 1926, in Perkinsville, the son of Arthur and Magdalene (Gunther) Malter. He resided in Perkinsville his entire life, graduating from Wayland Central School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He enlisted on March 14, 1945, and was honorably discharged Dec. 3, 1946. During his time in the Army, he qualified as sharpshooter.While stationed at Fort Devons, Mass., Steve met Margaret (Bettie) McDermott. They entered into a loving marriage on Nov. 29, 1947, in Fitchburg, Mass. Together, they celebrated over 56 years of marriage.Subsequent to his honorable discharge from the service, Steve was employed by Birds Eye Division of General Foods. His entire employment career was spent with the company at both the Wayland and Avon plants. After well over 41 years as a personnel manager and superintendent, he retired and began his second career of many years as a volunteer in many organizations and charities. He was always one of the key members of an organization. He was the one to call to repair anything, and was often seen selling tickets to benefit any one of the many local charities.Steve was a charter member of the Wayland Lions Club, a member of the Fearless Hook and Ladder Company of the Perkinsville Fire Department, a director of the Wayland Historical Society, president of the Perkinsville Rod & Gun Club, a member of the Agency for Aging, a key figure in the Wayland Community Chest, a Town of Wayland assessor for over 30 years, and a past chairman of the Republican Party. He could always be seen in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Perkinsville spending countless hours mowing, weeding and doing general maintenance.Steve also loved to hunt with his friends and often had everyone back to his home for lunch during the hunting season. He enjoyed ice fishing and spent time working with wood making different things. One of his greatest joys was his garden. It has been said that he had one of the best gardens in Perkinsville. They would enjoy the vegetables from the garden yearly as Steve and Bettie often canned the majority of the crop.Steve was predeceased by both his parents; a brother, Arthur (Buddy) Malter Jr.; and a sister, Kathleen Walters. He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret (Bettie) Malter of Perkinsville; his daughter Susan Malter of New Haven, Conn.; his two grandchildren, David and Chelsea of New Haven, Conn.; brothers Frank (Joyce) Malter of Cohocton and John V. (Kathie) Malter of Perkinsville; sisters Roseann (Donald) Lawrence of Arkport, Marlene (Charles) Wellington of Arkport, Dorothy (Leonard) Wager of Wayland, and Sally (Bud) Higginbotham of Wayland; his aunt, Rita Sequerios of Honduras; and several nieces and nephews.Steve's family and friends called 2-7 p.m. Sunday at the St. George-Stanton Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. A prayer service was conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Church in Perkinsville, the Rev.
