Ottilia "Tillie" Schmidt, 77, New Salem, died Aug. 9, 2012, at Elm Crest Manor, New Salem. Services were held on Monday, Aug. 13, at Church of St. Mary, Bismarck, with Rev. Charles Heidt officiating. Burial was at the Mandan Union Cemetery.
Tillie was born on Aug. 16, 1934, at St Joseph's, south of Glen Ullin, daughter to Harry and Rose (Emter) Berger. She married Nicodemous Schmidt on June 24, 1954, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Glen Ullin, North Dakota. Nick and Tillie were married for 48 years prior to their divorce in 2002.
Tillie worked at the St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck, in central supply for many years. She lived life in a simple manner, which reflected her personality of mild manner, gentle and generous. She had a good sense of humor, often sharing jokes with others. She spent many hours with her nieces and nephews, teaching and playing games and cards. A high point in her life was a trip to Germany, her ancestors' homeland, visiting a niece. She always looked forward to family gatherings and friends. For the past 12 years she has dealt with her illness of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy with courage and a positive attitude. The past six years she had resided at Elm Crest Manor and was very fond of her caregivers there, as well as they were of her. Per her wishes and in keeping with her generous ways, Tillie's body will be donated to the University of North Dakota School of Medicine.
Left with wonderful memories are her siblings, William (Beatrice) Berger, Mandan, Anna (Clemens) Fleck, Bismarck, Cecilia (Jerome) Geiger, Mandan, Regina Monaco, Missoula, Mont., Helen (Richard) Stein, Mandan, Agnes Vetter, Linton, Leonard (Alberta) Berger, St. Anthony, and Raymond (Diane) Berger, Mandan; sister-in-law, Katherine Berger, Pierre, S.D.; special niece and goddaughter, Phyllis Fleck Rittenbach; along with nearly 50 other nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Mathias Berger; brothers-in-law, Lucas Fleck, Joseph Monaco and Joseph F. Vetter; and former husband, Nick Schmidt.
