Joe Dauenhauer, 93, died peacefully in his sleep at his home July 25, 2007 with his wife, Mary Tischhauser, by his side. He was born on May 12, 1914, in Taylor, North Dakota, to Florian and Elizabeth Dauenhauer. He and his family moved to Wisconsin for a brief period, then relocated to Santa Rosa, Calif. in 1924. After graduating from Santa Rosa High School, he attended Santa Rosa Junior College for two years. At this time, he went to work for a hop broker, which took him to the major hop-growing areas in California.

In 1940, he married Blanche E. Wright. They raised seven children and had forty wonderful years together. In 1941, he and his brother, Florian, decided there had to be a better way to harvest hops. They put their heads together and invented the hop picking machine which is still in use today. In 1943, he began his own hop ranch in the Sacramento Valley. Along with growing hops, he also became interested in the cattle business. He acquired some ranch properties and began operating a cow/calf operation. Later, he purchased the Barron-Parker ranch near Ashland and moved his family there in 1962. He continued to operate the ranch until late last year.
While farming hops in the Sacramento Valley, Joe served as the president of the United Hop Growers of California for two years. As a cattle rancher in the Rogue Valley, he served on many agricultural and land committees. He was on the Bear Creek Water Quality Committee for five years, was director of the Jackson County Fair Board, as well as a member of the Jackson County and Oregon Cattlemen's Associations, the Elks Club of Ashland, and Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church. In 1998 he was honored as the Jackson County Cattleman of the Year. He was an avid reader, enjoyed traveling and thoroughly enjoyed being with his family. After eight years as a widower, Joe felt fortunate to find love once again and in 1989, he married Mary L. Tischhauser.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Tischhauser; seven children, Helene L. Archer (John), Ashland, Denyse J. Horsburgh (Dave), Ashland, Joseph G. Dauenhauer, Jr. (Debra), Ashland, Janet E. Jordan (Larry), Lebanon, Ore., Stephen W. Dauenhauer (Kay Yancey), Tigard, Ore., Julene M. Smith (Mike), Orland, Calif., Michael J. Dauenhauer (Jennice), Ashland; step-daughters Debra Tischhauser Boyle (David), Mercer Island, Wash., Lisa Tischhauser Stang (Ulrich), Solana Beach, Calf.; 26 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Blanche W. Dauenhauer, his parents, five brothers and one sister.
A Rosary will be recited at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home on Friday, July 27th at 7:00 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, July 28th at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church.
