When someone who has done so much for a community passes away, all who ever were acquainted with him or touched by him, feel the loss and collectively, they mourn. Such is the case with the passing of one of Caledonia's dearest friends and former writer of the popular weekly Caledonia Senior Citizens column, Thomas Cook, Sr., who died on February 17, 2007 at the LeRoy Village Green Nursing Home.
Mr. Cook was born on November 30, 1919 in Scottsville, NY the son of Hugh and Susan Cook. He was retired from Lapp Insulator in LeRoy, NY. Mr. Cook's dedicated involvement in several areas of the community won him many friends. He served several years as President of the Cal-Mum Senior Citizens, which he wrote a weekly column about in the Clarionand the community website. Tom's "Caledonia Senior Citizens," was the thread that bound the senior citizen community together. Through his writings, he encouraged them to come out for local luncheon meetings and organized bus trips for them to popular attractions around the State. He took his commitment to living happily in the golden years very serious and to help others ensure this, Tom sat on several county committees organized to help senior citizens. Through his work with advocates at the county level, Tom passed on valuable information to the local seniors about Medicare, HEAP, nutrition, the blue light program and much more. Cal-Mum senior citizens, and many not even near retirement, came to depend on Tom's wisdom and encouragement in his weekly column.
His positive attitude did not end with the weekly column. Tom's enduring Christian faith was manifest in his work with St. Columba's Catholic Church, the Cal-Mum Council of Churches and in his uplifting spirit whenever you met and spoke with him. Despite his own personal losses, including the loss of his children and wife in his lifetime, Tom always reminded others of his deep faith in God that saw him through the deepest valleys. He used his own difficult experiences in life to encourage others in their faith.
Tom was also a member of the Cal-Mum Lions Club who named him Citizen of the Year in 1998 for his work in the community. As a tribute to his late wife Dorothy who worked with the mentally ill, Tom continued her dedication by volunteering at Livingston County Mental Health. He also assisted at the Livingston County Office of the Aging.
Tom was an US Army Veteran of both WWII and Korea and a member of the Matthew Cleary American Legion Post and VFW in Caledonia and Mumford.
All who knew him acknowledged Tom as a loving and devoted husband and father. Tom was predeceased by his wife Dorothy Cook, son Thomas Cook and daughters Mary Ellen Harkness and Susan Cook.
He is survived by a loving family; grandchildren, Patricia (Carlos) Infante of Syracuse, Michael Leach and Alecia Leach, both of Caledonia, Kenneth Harkness of Delaware, Ashley (Brandon) Martin of Newark, Arley Cook, Kelsey Cook, both of Marion; daughter-in-law Maryellen Cook; 6 great grandchildren; several nieces including Linda (Donald) Sheffer, Donna (Stanley) MacWilliams; several great nieces and great nephews including Helen, Kathy and Robert MacWilliams and Karen Hooper.
Family and friends called Monday, February 19, 2007 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Alhart Funeral Home, 3068 West Main Street, Caledonia. A funeral mass was held Tuesday, February 20, 2007 at 10 a.m. at St. Columba Catholic Church in Caledonia with the Reverend Mickey McGrath officiating. Interment at St. Columba Cemetery in Caledonia.
