EDWIN G. AND NORMA NEUHARTH Edwin and Norma Neuharth Edwin Neuharth, the youngest child of George and Christina (Goehring) Neuharth, was born April 8, 1905 at the family home near Eureka. His father, George, born November 20, 1861, and his mother, Christina, born September 13, 1863, emigrated to the United States from their birthplace in the German settlement of Kassel, South Russia and lived in Menno, South Dakota. George's family arrived in 1874 and Christina's in 1879. After their marriage in Menno on January 16, 1883, George and Christina homesteaded fourteen miles northeast of Eureka where their fourteen children were born. Only seven of their children survived and grew to adulthood. Christina (Mrs. Christian) Opp, Katherina (Mrs. Fred) Hoff, and Margareta (Mrs. Christian) Ehresman each farmed with their husbands in the Eureka area. John and his wife, Magdalena Kallenberger, lived in Eureka for many years before moving to Pierre. Gottfried and his wife, Maxine Siltman, lived in Eureka and Aberdeen before moving to Sacramento, California. Elisabeth and her husband, Theophil Mehlhaff, were residents of Eureka and Aberdeen, prior to moving to Lodi, California. Christina died March 27, 1937 in Eureka. George died in Aberdeen on March 2, 1958. After graduating from Eureka High School in May, 1923, Edwin, known to his friends as "Dutch", attended State Agricultural College and Mechanic Arts (South Dakota State University, of Brookings, Northern State Normal, Aberdeen, and the University of Minnesota. He returned to Eureka where he was employed as assistant cashier at the Eureka State Bank, and he also became an insurance agent. In 1937, he was chairman of the finance committee for the Eureka Golden Jubilee. On August 4, 1927, Edwin and Norma Irene Treick were married in Eureka. Norma's father, Rev. Henry Treick, performed the ceremony. Norma was the youngest of the twelve children of Rev. Treick and his wife, Wilhelmina Kluge. Henry was born February 17, 1862 in Newton, Wisconsin and died August 18, 1935 in Scotland, South Dakota. Wilhelmina was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin on October 21, 1866 and died in Minneapolis, Minnesota on September 26, 1949. Norma was born in Scotland, South Dakota on September 12, 1908 and moved to Eureka with her family in 1921 when her father became minister of the Eureka Reformed Church. She graduated from Eureka High School in May, 1926, and attended the University of Minnesota prior to her marriage. Of her six sisters and five brothers, Paul, Alma, Esther (Mrs. Henry) Goeken and Selma (Mrs. William) Winger were also residents of Eureka. While they were living in Eureka, Edwin and Norma had two daughters. Margaret Elisabeth (Peggy), born February 15, 1929, is married to Robert F. Middleton, Jr. They live in Sacramento, California and have two sons, David C. and Jeffrey M. Mary Ann, born December 17, 1937, is married to Michael J. O'Kane. Their home is Fair Oaks, California, and they have three children, Michael J., Kimberley Ann, and Timothy J. Norma and Edwin were residents of Eureka until 1940 when they moved first to Fort Lauderdale, Florida; then to Aberdeen; Vinita, Oklahoma; DesMoines, Iowa; and finally to Sacramento, California. There, Edwin was a certified public accountant, serving as unclaimed property officer for the California State Controller's Office until his retirement in 1968. Norma was also employed by the State of California, retiring in 1964. Norma died February 2, 1980 and Edwin died on May 7, 1985.
