Bertha Kirschenmann, daughter of Johanna (Knoepfle) and John Kirschenmann, was born May 2, 1919, at her parent's farm in Campbell County, six miles southeast of Artas. Shortly after her birth, the family relocated to a farm two miles south of there. Bertha received her formal education at the Postal Rural School.
Following her schooling, she worked on the farm and was employed at the Eureka Lutheran Home. Bertha also spent a half of a year working as a nanny in Michigan. She married Edwin Hoff at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Artas on Dec. 3, 1944. They settled on their farm six miles west and one mile south of Eureka. Mr. Hoff died March 29, 2003, and Bertha moved into Eureka later that year.
Since August 2009, she had resided at the Healthcare Center. She was a member of the Artas EUB Church for many years, where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She most recently belonged to the Eureka United Methodist Church, where she was active with the United Methodist Women (UMW). Her hobbies included gardening and raising flowers. Bertha faithfully mailed greeting cards and letters to all generations of her family, an act cherished by all who received them.
Family surviving Bertha include her son, Gary (Joan) Hoff, of Phoenix, Ariz.; four daughters: Sharon (Wade) Winters of Urbandale, Iowa, Bonita (Don) Austin of Waukee, Iowa, Kathryn (David) Glader of Colton and Gail (Dale) Duenwald of Hoven; 19 grandchildren: Wade Lee Winters and Michelle Greene of Des Moines, Iowa, Christy DuBois of Arlington, Texas, Marc Austin and Mitchell Austin of Provo, Utah, Monae Starbuck of Midland, Ga., Michael Austin of Brigham City, Utah, Matthew Austin of Waukee, Iowa, Rachel Frost of Egan, Minn., Paul Glader of New York, N.Y., Ruth Chase of Chicago, Ill., Peter Glader of Fayetteville, N.C., Philip Glader and Caleb Glader of Colton, Andrew Glader of St. Cloud, Minn., Sarae Hoff of Tucson, Ariz., Michael Duenwald of Hoven, Jonathon Duenwald of Lowry and Mandy Maynard of Redfield; and 29 great-grandchildren.
