Lois Mildred Muntain of Centreville, MD died peacefully at her home, surrounded by her family, Tuesday, April 2, 2013. She was 96.
She was born January 9, 1917 in Salemville, PA, the eldest of four daughters of Charles P. and Mary B. Replogle.
She graduated from J. Leonard Replogle High School in 1935, and during World War II, she worked at Maryland Drydock as a timekeeper. It was there she met her husband, Charles Thomas Muntain. They were married March 8, 1946, and were married for 57 years until the death of Mr. Muntain in 2004.
"Miss Lois" worked as a doctor's nurse for 31 years in Baltimore. When she and her husband retired, they moved from Crofton to Centreville in 1985. It was there that she began a second career working for the Queen Anne's County Department of Aging as an escort driver, a position she held until she retired at age 90. She was selected as the Paratransit Driver of the Year in 1998.
She was a member of Mother of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church in Centreville and a volunteer at Hospice of Queen Anne's.
She is survived by four daughters, Miriam and Wayne Retkofsky of Apopka, FL, Rev. Karen and Ben Dize of Queenstown, MD, Mary Beth and Melvin Gardner of Centreville, MD and Kathleen and Frank Bahus of Severn, MD; one son, Wayne and Jane Muntain of New Enterprise, PA; one sister, Vera Mae Stern of Martinsburg, PA; one sister-in-law, Mary Dolores Hemelt of Bel Air, MD; eleven grandchildren, David Retkofsky of Lancaster, PA, Lisa Guacci of Charlotte, NC, Dr. Angela Holocker of Centreville, MD, Michael Gardner of Arnold, MD, Joshua Muntain of East Aurora, NY, Mark Muntain of Falls Church, VA, Noah Dize of Annapolis, MD, Matthew Dize of Centreville, MD, Juliana Balich of San Clemente, CA, Brenna Bahus of Tokyo, Japan, Alexander Bahus of Baltimore, MD; thirteen great-grandchildren, Zachary & Kelley Holocker of Centreville, MD, Brittany Retkofsky of Miami, FL, Cody Hunter of Bensalem, PA, Laura and Cara Guacci of Charlotte, NC, Maura and Michael Gardner of Arnold, MD, Jacob and Ryan Dize of Centreville, MD, Caleb and Tirzah Muntain of East Aurora, NY and Marina Muntain of Falls Church, VA. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one son, Michael Muntain and two sisters, Sara Ritchey and Ida Baker.
Friends and family may call on Monday, April 8, 2013 at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., Centreville, MD from 6 – 8 PM. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at Mother of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church, Centreville, MD at 11:00 AM.
Interment will follow at the Maryland Veteran's Cemetery, Hurlock, MD.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Queen Anne's Inc., 255 Comet Drive, Centreville, MD 21617.
