White Pigeon; Phillip R. HOFFELDER, age 99, of 607 E. Chicago Road, White Pigeon, Mich., died Jan. 24, 2004, at Thurston Woods Village, Sturgis, after a short illness.
He was born Feb. 22, 1904, in Waterloo, Ind., a son of Peter and Katherine (SCHOLESER) HOFFELDER. He had been a White Pigeon resident since 1928, coming from Kendallville, Ind.
On Feb. 11, 1928, he married Euphemia May ROSS in Sturgis. She died Oct. 29, 1985.
He served as White Pigeon Chief of Police and Deputy Sheriff from 1928-1942, chief of police in Cadillac, a railroad detective; and was employed by Bendix Corp. in South Bend, Ind. He also was owner and operator of P&M Plumbing and Heating of White Pigeon from 1946 until his retirement in 1974.
A past street commissioner and superintendent of the White Pigeon Water Department, he received the Presidentâ??s Award from the Village of White Pigeon in 1984.
He was honored to have met President Franklin D. Roosevelt during WW II and was on board the Presidentâ??s train while he was a railroad detective.
Surviving are; a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Joy) KONNECK of White Pigeon; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Jean FORD; seven sisters and six brothers.
Visitation is from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Farrand Funeral Home in White Pigeon, where services are at 1 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Pat Braswell officiating. Burial will be in White Pigeon Township Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the White Pigeon Depot Restoration Fund. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

WHITE PIGEON -- Phillip R. Hoffelder, 99, of 607 E. Chicago Road, died at 7:10 a.m. Saturday (Jan. 24, 2004) at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis after a short illness. He was born Feb. 22, 1904, in Waterloo, Ind., to Peter and Katherine (Scholeser) Hoffelder. He married Euphemia May Ross on Feb. 11, 1928, in Sturgis. She died Oct. 29, 1985.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Joy) Konneck of White Pigeon; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jean Ford, seven sisters and six brothers.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Farrand Funeral Home in White Pigeon, where the service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Pat Braswell will officiate. Burial will be in White Pigeon Township Cemetery.
