Edward ?Bud? Wirth, 95, of Ames, formerly of La Fayette Township in Story County, died June 3, 2012, at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. He had been a resident of Bethany Manor in Story City for a year. A Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 7, 2012, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Ames with Rev. James Secora officiating. Burial will be in the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery, northwest of Gilbert. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Church in Ames where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Visitation continues from 9 a.m. to service time on Thursday at the Church.
Bud was born on the family farm in La Fayette Township in Story County on Oct. 29, 1916. He was the youngest of 10 children born to Peter and Amelia (Baldus) Wirth. Bud graduated from Story City High School in 1935. On Jan. 5, 1942, he married Arlene Miller at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, rural Gilbert. Bud served with the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a grain farmer and also raised livestock including dairy cattle, chickens, hogs, and sheep. He sold fresh eggs. Later, he measured land for ASCS, now FSA in Story County. Bud and Arlene moved to Roland in 1978 and then to Ames in 2001. Bud enjoyed gardening, watching sports on television, bowling, golfing, and playing cards and traveling with Arlene. He also enjoyed having coffee with his friends at McDonalds.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and six sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Arlene, of Ames; five sons, Robert (Judy) Wirth, of Gilbert, David (Denise) Wirth, of Ames, Steve (Barb) Wirth, of rural Gilbert, and Paul (Kim) Wirth and Phillip (Karen) Wirth, both of rural Story City; four daughters, Mary (Tim) Hanson, Sue (Terry) Berg, and Joan Wirth, all of Ames, and Jean Grady of Roland; 26 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In memory of Bud, memorials may be directed to the family. Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall in Boone is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be made to www.schroedermemorialchapel.com.
