HOBSON, John Charles

John Hobson was born September 18, 1895, in Leeton, Missouri. His parents, Richard Nelson and Frances Grigsby Welch Hobson, and three brothers, Richard Elmer, Edward Walter, and Grigsby Nelson came to Leeton from Virginia before he was born. As a youth he was baptized in the Baptist Church of Leeton and more recently attended Drakes Chapel Church. He completed college at William Jewell in Liberty and joined the army December 8, 1917, and honorably discharged July 2, 1919. He was assigned to the 14th Co. 2 Regiment and stationed in Paris France as an airplane mechanic. He married Thelma F. Diehl on June 14, 1923, and they had three children, John Carroll Hobson, Prairie Village Kansas, Betty June Fey, Atlanta Georgia and Nancy Sue Dody (formerly Hite), Clinton; four grandchildren, Mana Hobson, San Francisco, California, Tana Hobson, Prairie Village, Kansas, Stacy (Hite) Wilson, Lee's Summit and Karen Hite, Warrensburg. John and Thelma Hobson operated a dry goods store on the north side of the Square in Clinton from 1927 through 1937, then they moved to their farm near Calhoun. In 1953, they started Hobson Furniture in Clinton. Mr. Hobson was a 65 year Mason and a Life Member of the Clinton Post of the V.F.W. He was preceded in death by his wife on January 15, 1982. Funeral services were held Saturday, November 22, at the Drake's Chapel Methodist Church. Burial was in Englewood.
