She attended grade school at Lewis School and as a young girl she worked on the farm and was considered very competent with a team of horses. The Kansas City Star wrote an article about Thelma and published a photo of her and her horse team, in the early 1900's. She attended the Catholic Academy and graduated from Clinton High School, where she had to room and board in order to finish her education. Thelma then attended the State College at Warrensburg where she obtained at two-year teaching degree. She taught school for two years at East School, which was a mile east of Lewis Station. Thelma married John Charles Hobson June 4, 1923, and they resided for a time at Lewis Station. Thelma and John started a dry goods business called Hobson Drygoods and Shoes just before the stock market crash of 1929 and they operated the store throughout the depression. In 1937, they sold the drygoods business and bought the Charlie Newman farm east of Lewis Station, which remained her home until death. In 1952, Thelma and John began the Hobson and Son Trading Post, a business that dealt with fire-stock merchandise for re-sale. They also sold furniture and linoleum returns and close-outs from Sears and Roebuck. The Trading Post was initially housed in what is now the Unitog Building. The Hobson's changed their efforts to new furniture and carpeting in the mid-1950's and moved to the location at Main and Grandriver that is now Hobson Interiors. By the 1970's, Hobson and Son Furniture business reputation had spread to Kansas City, people came from all over the metropolitan area to purchase furniture at their store. In 1981, the store was purchased by Jim Martin and Richard Wirsig and they now operate the business from the same location. Outside of the business, Thelma was known for her cooking. She loved to garden and spent many summer days canning. She and John had four children, three of whom survive. Their first child, Charles Nelson, lived only a few months. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Lily Diehl; a sister Hazel Newman; and a brother Virgil Diehl. Thelma is survived by her husband, John Hobson, who resides on the farm; a sister, Opal Betts of Stockton California; and children, Carroll Hobson of Prairie Village Kansas, Betty Fey of Atlanta, Georgia and Nancy Dody of Clinton.
