Esther Hoffman
SPRINGFIELD — A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 8, at First Baptist Church in Lodi, Calif., for Esther Hoffman of Springfield, who died May 24 of age-related causes. She was 85.
She was born Aug. 13, 1923, in McPherson County, S.D., to Jacob and Lydia Schauer Fischer [surname corrected from original error in newspaper]. She married Raymond Hoffman in Ashley, N.D.
She held a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Sioux Falls in South Dakota. She worked as a teacher and as a missionary.
Survivors include two children, Dennis Hoffman of Lodi, Calif., and Lois Sheffield of Springfield; two siblings, Alice Schrenk of Aberdeen, S.D., and Helen Ehman of Alpena, Mich.; and six grandchildren. Her husband died in 2002.
Private inurnment will be in Lodi Memorial Park. Arrangements by Major Family Funeral Home in Springfield. Remembrances to First Baptist Church in Lodi, for Cameroon missions.

Esther Hoffman, 85, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, May 24th in a Eugene, Oregon Care facility.
She was born on August 13, 1923, in McPherson County, South Dakota to Jacob C. and Lydia (nee Schauer) Fischer and moved to Lodi in 1990. She received Christ as her personal Savior at the age of nine.
On June 5th, 1947 she was married to Raymond Hoffman, in Ashley ND who passed away in 2002. Before her marriage, she taught school and was employed at the South Dakota State Unemployment office. She graduated from the University of Sioux Falls with a B.S. degree in education. She continued to teach and did private tutoring.
She served with her husband who pastored churches in South Dakota, Oregon and California. For eight years, they served as missionaries with the North American Baptist Conference in Cameroon, West Africa. Esther enjoyed working with children and in women's work.
Esther is survived by her two children, Dennis Hoffman, Lodi, CA, and Lois Sheffield, Springfield, OR; six grandchildren and sisters, Alice Schrenk, Aberdeen, SD and Helen Ehman, Alpena, MI.
Memorial service will be at First Baptist Church, Lodi, Monday, June 8th at 11:00 a.m. The committal service will be private. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be sent to First Baptist Church 267 N. Mills Ave., Lodi, CA 95242 and dedicated to the Cameroon children and woman's mission work.
