STOCKPORT - Winafred Evelyn Weisend Harra, 85, of Stockport (Palmer Square) departed this life on Sunday (July 13, 2008) at Muskingum Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation, Beverly. She was diagnosed in February 2008 with cholangiocarcinoma (glandular liver cancer).
Winafred was born Nov. 16, 1922, at Devols Dam, Marietta, the daughter of William Leonard Weisend and Carol Lauer Weisend. She was a 1940 graduate of Waterford High School and enjoyed going to the alumni banquets for many years. She was bookkeeper for the Palmer Feed & Supply for 32 years, which she and her husband, Ray, owned and operated with the help of family members. She enjoyed going to the Barlow Fair every year and exhibited three dozen of her doilies two years ago.
Winafred was a 4-H adviser. She was a member of the Waterford Grange for over 70 years, and was a member of the Palmer Willing Workers Club where she was secretary for many years. She was a member of the Wolf Creek Homemakers Club where she was the news reporter for several years. Winafred was known for her wonderful cooking, delicious pies, and especially her homemade rolls. She looked forward to going to her club meetings each and every month. She taught herself to crochet and made hundreds of beautiful doilies which she gave to family and friends. In May 2008, she made doilies for her great-granddaughters Ashley and Allissa. She enjoyed reading lots of newspapers and magazines, working puzzles in her spare time, gardening and canning every year. She would bake cookies almost every week in order to have cookies for everyone who came to their house. She took cookies to the doctor's office each time she had an appointment and everyone in the office enjoyed her cookies.
Winafred attended the Palmer United Methodist Church for many years. She was usually the first one to church on Sunday mornings. Some years, she never missed a Sunday going to church.
Winafred married Ray Arthur Harra, June 2, 1941, who survives with their three children, daughter Patricia Rae Harra Hitchcock and her husband, William Paul Hitchcock, of Porterfield, Ohio, and their two children, Jay Henry Hitchcock of West Virginia, and Paula Rae Hitchcock of Balitmore, Md.; son, Fredric Lynn Harra and his wife, Vicki Jo Nicewanger Harra of Zanesville, and their two children, Jo Lynn Harra McLean Osborn and her husband, Kris Osborn, of Duncan Falls, Ohio, and her two daughters, Ashley Dawn McLean and Allissa Ann McLean, and Mitchell Ray Harra of Columbus, Ohio; and son, Donovan Alan Harra and his wife, Deanna Kay Bohl Harra, and their two children, Chad Alan Harra and Christina Lynn Harra, all of Stockport route, Oak Hill area.
She is survived by one sister, Juanita Elaine Weisend Laughery Meyers and her husband, Loius Meyers of Beverly; one brother, Billy Weisend of Parkersburg; sister-in-law, Mary Waterman Weisend of Port Clinton, Ohio; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Stollar Weisend Nicely of Proctorville, Ohio; brother-in-law, George M. Harra and his wife, Cleda Stollar Harra; and brother-in-law, Wayne L. Harra, all of Waterford route. She is survived by several cousins, many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Winafred was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Lee Vernon Weisend, killed November 1944 during World War II in France; brother, Paul Edward Weisend, in June 1977; brother, Leonard Edwin Weisend, in November 1985; brother, Eugene Peace Weisend, in December 2007; sisters-in-law, Edith Davis Weisend, Dorothy Evrit Weisend, Helen Tyson Weisend, Eleanor Rogers Weisend, and Doris Stollar Harra; and brother-in-law, Clarence Laughery.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at McCurdy Funeral Home, Beverly, with the Rev. Helen Kline officiating. Burial will be in Waterford Cemetery. Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
