Lois E. Fyock
Article Last Updated; Sunday, January 25, 2009Lois E. Fyock, the mother of Durango resident Laura Bartel, died of congestive heart failure at Vista Mesa Assisted Living in Cortez on Friday, Jan. 16, 2009. She was 86.
Mrs. Fyock had relocated from Lemon Grove, Calif., to Durango in August to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Brad Bartel.
She was born to George and Leota Asher in Gearhart, Ore., on Dec. 30, 1922. Mrs. Fyock was raised on a farm. She played saxophone and piano and graduated from Amity High School in Amity, Ore.
She attended the Northwestern School of Commerce in Portland, Ore.
Her family said she was fiercely patriotic and left college to join the Navy in 1943 during World War II. Mrs. Fyock served for six years with Women Accepted for Voluntary Service and earned the rank of chief - the highest rank available to women at that time. Her stations included Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Washington, D.C., and San Francisco.
In 1948, she met and married Robert A. Fyock, who also was a Navy chief, in San Diego. The marriage ended in divorce after 34 years.
Mrs. Fyock was self-employed, managing her rental properties.
She enjoyed vegetable gardening and was an active volunteer. Her service included several PTA boards, the Lemon Grove Woman's Club and more than 25 years on the San Diego Election Board. She also attended Grossmont College in La Mesa, Calif., in the 1980s.
Mrs. Fyock was preceded in death by her daughter, Louise Fyock in 2008.
She is survived by her daughters, Laura Bartel of Durango and Linda Ebersole Gilgen of Providence, Utah; brother, Kenneth Asher, of Bend, Ore.; six grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Cremation has occurred. A memorial service is scheduled for early March in Lemon Grove.

FYOCK, LOIS ELMINA Longtime resident of Lemon Grove, Lois E. Fyock passed away on January 16, 2009, in Colorado from congestive heart failure. She was 86. Mrs. Fyock was born to George and Leota Asher in Gearhart, OR, on December 30, 1922. She was raised on a farm, participated in 4-H, played saxophone and piano, and graduated from Amity High School, Amity, OR in 1941. She attended the Northwestern School of Commerce, Portland, OR. Love of country compelled her to leave school and join the Navy in 1943 during World War II. She served for six years as a WAVE and earned the rank of Chief - the highest rank available to women at the time. Her stations included Pearl Harbor, Washington, DC, and San Francisco. In 1948, she married Robert A. Fyock, also a Navy Chief, in San Diego. The marriage ended in divorce after 34 years. Mr. Fyock died in 1990. Mrs. Fyock was a homemaker and managed her rental properties. She enjoyed vegetable gardening, collecting penguin figurines and volunteering. She served several years on the PTA Boards of San Miguel Elementary and Lemon Grove Junior High, and also as Board President of the Helix High Music Parents Association. Her community service also included the Lemon Grove Women's Club, the San Diego Rescue Mission, the Grossmont Hospital Auxillary and over 20 years with the San Diego Registrar of Voters. She also attended Grossmont College, La Mesa in the 1980s and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the American Legion. Mrs. Fyock was preceded in death by an infant grandson, John Robert Ebersole; her twin brother, Elvin "Bud" Asher and brothers, Orville and James Asher; and her daughter, Louise E. Fyock. She is survived by her daughters, Linda Ebersole Gilgen of Providence, UT and Laura Bartel of Durango, CO; a brother, John "Kenny" Asher, of Bend, OR; her grandchildren, Laura Francis of Sandy, UT; John Charles Ebersole and Joseph Gilgen of Providence, UT; Jason Passarelli of El Cajon, CA; Jordan Bartel of Baltimore, MD and Kimberly Bartel of Asheville, NC; several great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her daughters state that "Mom was a woman of faith and all who knew her appreciated her beauty, friendliness, and sense of humor." Cremation has occurred. A Celebration of Mrs. Fyock's life will take place on Tuesday, March 10th, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Lemon Grove. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the or the American Legion.
