Eula Guthrie Fyock, 98, died on March 12, 2008 at Heart of Lancaster Hospital. She had been a resident of Brethren Village, Neffsville, since 1980. She was an active volunteer at Brethren Village until 2004, serving as van escort, as a member of the Residents Council and chairman of the Spiritual Life Commission Film Committee.She was a member of the Lititz Church of the Brethren.
Born in Accident, MD, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Flossie Spoerlein Guthrie. A 1931 graduate of Juniata College, she was secretary-treasurer of the Juniata Central Pennsylvania Alumni Association for 41 years. She continued graduate study at Penn State and Temple University.
A life member of both the Dauphin County and Pennsylvania Retired Teachers Associations, Mrs. Fyock taught home economics for 27 years in several school districts, retiring from the Harrisburg Public Schools in 1972. In 2001, she was honored as volunteer of the year by the Dauphin County organization.
She and her husband, the late Ray L. Fyock, were active members and lifetime deacons of the Harrisburg First Church of the Brethren. There she was a Sunday School teacher, youth advisor, member of the church board, chairman of the Nurture Commission, and Representative to the Dauphin County Church Women United. She also served as a member of the finance committee of the Pennsylvania Church Women United and as
secretary-treasurer and as president of the Women?s Fellowship of the Atlantic Northeast
District of the Church of the Brethren.
Mrs. Fyock is survived by a daughter, Joan Fyock Norris, wife of Philip, Lititz; 5 step grandchildren, 17 step great-grandchildren and 22 step great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 27 years, Ray Fyock, who died in 1961, a half-brother, Harry Guthrie; half-sister, Grace Frazee, brother, Wayne Guthrie, step-daughters, Helen V. Pisle, Betty Walton, and Mary Jane Snyder, and step grandchildren Beverly Snyder Zielinske, and Thomas Walton, Jr.
Since 1961 Eula supported 21 foster children through Plan USA(Foster Parents Plan).
Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 17, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. at Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 West Orange St., Lititz. There will be a viewing on Sunday Evening from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Brethren Village Chapel, 3001 Lititz Pike, Lancaster,and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Burial will be in East Harrisburg Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial lcontributions may be made to Plan USA, 155 Plan Way, Warwick, RI 02886 or the Lititz Church of the Brethren Capital Campaign.
