Orpha Alfert Vess
OWER SALEM ? Orpha Alfert ?O.A.? Vess, 94, of Lower Salem, died Thursday evening (Sept. 8, 2005) at his home.
He was born Jan. 31, 1911, in Graysville, and was the son of the late Lewis Oathes Vess and Martha ?Mattie? McGilton Vess. He was one of seven children and spent most of his young life in the Sycamore Valley area of Monroe County. After serving in the military in World War II, he worked in the oil fields in southeast Ohio and Oklahoma. He was the owner of Vess Drilling and co-owner of Pine Knob Oil. On Feb. 24, 1933, he married Myrtle Agatha Yockey, who preceded him in death on Nov. 1, 1986. Together they had a son, George C. Vess of Lower Salem, who continues with Vess Drilling and Pine Knob Oil today. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed his life on the farm and his family.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Emery and Dewey; two sisters, Sylvia and Ethel; his daughter-in-law, Donna Vess; and Jeff Cisler.
He is survived by his immediate family of sisters, Inez Vess Yockey and Dora Vess Piett; his wife, Mildred Okey Vess; his son, George (Ginny) Vess; his grandchildren, Randy (Peggy) Vess, Ron (Genie) Vess, and Linda Vess Cisler; and great-grandchildren, Eric (Kelly) Vess, Matt Vess, Victor (Emily) Vess, Cory Cisler, Colt Cisler, Cody Cisler, Cavin Cisler, and Connor Cisler.
Orpha was a member of the Lower Paw Paw Church of Christ.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home with Roger Rush and Harold Kenny Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Salem Township Cemetery with military rites at the funeral home. Friends may call from 2 p.m. Sunday until the hour of the service at the funeral home. The family will be present to meet friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.
