Born to Lewis Conrad & Myrtle Miller Friedly. He attended grade school at High Prairie rural school and graduated from Stover High School in 1949. He worked on the family farm until he was drafted into the US Army in 1952 to serve during the latter part of the Korean War. In the Army, his tour of duty included Fort Knox, KY & Munich,
Germany. He advanced to the rank of Sergeant & was honorably discharged in 1954. After returning home from the service, Claude worked for California Packing Corporation (Del Monte) in Illinois, then for Hallmark Cards in Kansas City, MO before enrolling in the University of Missouri, College of Agriculture in 1955. Among the many jobs he held while attending college, Claude most enjoyed working on a local farm owned by the Missouri Secretary of Agriculture. He completed his studies and graduated with a degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Missouri in the fall of 1959. In 1960 Claude went to work for Del Monte in DeKalb, IL
He married Joan Carolyn (Carlson) Cates on December 16, 1961 at the First Lutheran Church, DeKalb, IL in 1962. Del Monte transferred him to Rochelle, IL. In 1968 he moved to Mendota, IL and in 1971, returned to Rochelle, IL to manage the largest Del Monte farming operation in the Midwest Division. Claude and Joan remained in Rochelle until the late 1980's when he was transferred to Kennewick, WA. During his career with Del Monte, Claude graduated from the Dale Carnegie Leadership Course, served on the Agr-Business Advisory Board of Kishwaukee College and held positions as a Board Member and President of the Del Monte Midwest Federal Credit Union. He retired from Del Monte in 1991.
Claude was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joan, in March, 2001. He is survived by his brothers and sisters, Russell Friedly, Fayette, IA; Hellen Browning, Ionia, MO; Elva Friedly, Overland Park, KS; L.D. Friedly, Butler, MO; and Ross Friedly, Blackburn, MO. Surviving nieces & nephews are: Lynn Utley, St. Louis, MO; Nancy Hall, Coweta, OK; Lora Rodenberg, Parkville, MO; Cinda O'Keefe, Marietta, GA; Dale Friedly, Atlanta, GA; Jeff Friedly, Sedalia, MO; Alan Friedly, Huntsville, MO; Wallace Friedly, West Union, IA; Kenneth Friedly, Fayette, IA; Lois Ann Friedly, Olwein, IA; Robert Friedly, Waterloo, IA; Arlene Greene, Lena, IL; Lyle Browning, Ionia, MO; Victor Browning, Lincoln, MO; & Janet Igguiden, St. Louis, MO.
