FORT MYERS, Fla. - Goldie Marie Burness, 94, of Fort Myers, Fla., passed away at HealthPark Medical Center on Sunday (July 5, 2009) as a result of cardiac arrest.
She was born Feb. 17, 1915, in Monroe County, Lebanon, Ohio, the daughter of Homer Newhart and Lula Pabst Newhart.
On Oct. 11, 1941, she married William A. Burness, who preceded her in death in 1987.
She attended Ohio University and taught school in a one-room schoolhouse in Ohio. Goldie was a member of the Order of Eastern Stars. She attended Southside Christian Church in Fort Myers, Fla.
Goldie is survived by three daughters, Mary Ellen (Gerald) Harvey of Fort Myers, Fla., Billie Jo Meldrum of Radcliff, Ky., and Jean A. Burness of Calabash, N.C.: four grandchildren, Elizabeth Harvey Godwin, Margaret Harvey Briscoe, Michele Meldrum Redmond and Paul Meldrum; four great-grandchildren, Christopher Redmond, Katherine Godwin, Sarah Godwin and Audrey Godwin; and her sister, Ruth E. English of Fort Myers, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Mabel Victoria Newhart; and brother, Paul Edward Newhart.
Interment will be in Salem Township Cemetery, Salem Township, Monroe County, Ohio.
