St. Joseph's Catholic Church was organized in 1883; under the leadership of Father John Conrad, O. S. B. The first church directors were John Spaedy, Lawrence Esser, and Joseph Gantner. Upon hearing the plans, Mr. Samuel Roe donated an acre of land for the site. Joseph Gantner, an early brick maker, was given the contract to make the bricks. On May 10, 1895, services were begun with 35 families as members. Father Pius Conrad was appointed as the first pastor. The membership continued to grow until in 1929 the old church was outgrown. Under the direction of Father Joachim, O. S. B., it was decided to begin a new church. A basement was first built, and finished properly for holding services. A depression had hit the country, and the congregation was financially unable to complete the building. It was under the direction of Father Ingoldsby that the new church was constructed. It was dedicated in 1957. Later, the old church, which had been used as a hall, was torn down. A new brick convent was built on this place. Monsignor Hagedorn was pastor at that time. Father Francis Gillgannon is pastor at present. From, "Pilot Grove Centennial Book, 1873-1973" St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Pilot Grove, Mo. "The St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery had its beginning in 1899. Mr. Pete Bock donated two acres of ground for the cemetery. Mr. Bock's farm was located about one mile south from the church and adjoined the town site. Mr. Bock tended the burila grounds for some time, followed by Walter Kraus, John Spaedy, Carl Nelson, and Henry Krumm who has been overseer for seventeen years. This burial ground is old, the rows neat, the graves regular, and marked by simple stones of marble. The first person buried there was Mr. Louis Roth, 1829-1899. There are now 538 graves to tend. On February 1, 1971, the St. Joseph Cemetery Association was formed." From "Pilot Grove Centennial Book, 1873-1973" Cemetery Records of Cooper County, Missouri Volume VII
