Mabel E. Steele, 86, of 823 Lewisville Road, Woodsfield, died Feb. 2, 1998 in Bishop Joseph H. Hodges Continuous Care Center, Wheeling. She was born in Monroe County, June 30, 1911, a daughter of the late William E. Young and Julia Viola Hodge Young.
She was a member of Buchanan Presbyterian Church, Lewisville, where she was the church pianist for 60 years and also a member of Eastern Star Lodge No. 268 of Woodsfield.
Surviving are her husband, Glenn; four daughters, Norma Eells, of St. Clairsville, Joy Graham, of Wooster, Janet Pember, of Beaumont, Texas, Rita Braverman, of Alpharetts, Ga.; a brother, Irvin "Bud" Young, of Canton; a sister, Edith Young, Lewisville; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Audrey Harrington, Leora Weber, Wilene Jackson.
Friends will be received Feb. 4 from 2 - 9 p.m. at the Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield, where services will be held at 1 p.m., Feb. 5, with Rev. Colleen Finlay officiating. Interment in Oaklawn Cemetery, Woodsfield. Eastern Star Lodge service will be held Feb. 4, at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mabel (Young) Steele suffered a stroke in August of 1996 which caused her to loose her ability to talk. It distressed her to not be able to communicate, but, she otherwise seemed fine. Then, about mid-January of 1998 she suffered a second stroke that seemed to either cause her pain or cause loss of control of her reason. She would cycle between being lucid and wailing. On January 31 she suffered another stroke that caused her to lapse into a comma from which she never recovered. Mabel died around 10:00 o'clock on Monday, February 2, 1998.
