Birth: Feb. 4, 1912 Lodi San Joaquin County California, USA Death: Oct. 15, 1934 Lodi San Joaquin County California, USA The Lodi Sentinel 16 Oct 1934 Leon Mettler Killed in Fall From Winery Leon Arthur Mettler, 22, was killed in a tragic accident yesterday afternoon while at work at the Bear Creek Winery near Lodi. The youth fell from a wine tank 18 feet to a concrete floor and fractured his skull. Dr. A.C. Boehmer was called to the winery as Mettler was dead when the doctor arrived. Mettler was at the top of the tank and was to signal W.B. McDuell, winery engineer, when the tank had been filled with wine. When no signal came, McDuell climbed to the tank and discovered the youth lying between two tanks 18 feet below, Deputy Coroner, James Carroll, said that Mettler had, apparently fallen head first to the concrete floor between the two tanks. Death was almost instantaneous. The accident closed the career of the most promising athlete ever to graduate from Lodi High School. He was the captain for the Flame Football team in 1930 and for three years was the unanimous choice for the Central Section C.I.F. all star football team. In 1930 he was chosen for the Northern Callifornia All Star football team selected by Husky Hunt of Stanford University. Mettler played guard and was always an inspiration to his team for his fine leadership and sterling play. He was also a member of the high school track team and this year had been playing baseball for the Lodi Merchants. Mettler was the son of Mr. & Mrs. J. J. Mettler, prominent residents of the Lodi district who lived south of Lodi. He is also survived by four brothers, Marvin J., Arthur, Howard and Albert R. Mettler, all of Lodi. Mrs. Rosina (last name not included in article) was his grandmother. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Salem Reformed church, corner of Lodi and Pleasant Avenues. Rev.
