- Emma Belle Eskew, fourth child of Thomas and Mary Eskew, was born in Palmyra, IN on August 26, 1900. Emma Eskew arrived in Baca County with her family in May, 1915.
When Thomas Eskew moved to the Pritchett area to prove his claim of land offered for homesteading, Jacie and Emma filed a claim on an 80 acre plot adjoining the 320 acre farm. This acreage now belongs to Jacie's son, Chester Kreiger.
Emma Eskew and P.C. "Cecil" Stuart were married on March 11, 1921, in Joy Coy, CO. P.C. Stuart was a traveling evangelist for the First Church of God. Emma Eskew Stuart was always willing to accept a challenge; one of the first, accepting the responsibility of helping her new husband raise his five children. The family established a home in Hugoton, KS.
The Rev. P.C. Stuart was always in demand for Revival Meetings and often was away from the family for as much as six months at a time. Thus the responsibility for the five children and the five children that were to be born to P.C. and Emma Stuart, was Emma's. Norma Jeanne was born in January, 1924; Mary Lois in July, 1925; Virginia Lynn in February, 1927; Howard Presley in November, 1929 and Paul Neal in December, 1931.
Although left alone with a growing family, Emma taught her children the true meaning of Christian love. Emma was stricken with Parkinson's Disease in 1926. Even with the prospect of being crippled, she continued working with her husband and family in Christian work and had the reputation of being able to cheer any one who came to visit.
In 1939, Cecil Stuart accepted the call to the Mission Field in Cuba serving six to nine months a year for seventeen years. Emma remained in the States as the younger children finished school.
These years were a test of faith as the salary for missionaries was strictly left up to the Lord. Emma's faith was rewarded as friends and acquaintances helped meet the financial need.
During these years, the Stuart family lived in Lakeland, FL and Darlington, SC. Emma sacrificed visits with family and friends in Baca County, but always longed for the day when she would live closer to her mother, sisters and brothers.
In August, 1946, the Stuart family moved to Nowata, OK; they could again be with the family they had seen very little of for more than ten years. Until ill health forced them to remain at home, Cecil and Emma would try to visit the Springfield and Pritchett areas. Cecil looked forward to helping Bill Eskew harvest Broom Corn.
Cecil and Emma Stuart had dedicated their lives to promoting the work of the Lord. Death came to P.C. Stuart on April 3, 1961, Easter Sunday. Emma Stuart died on December 21, 1964, in Nowata, OK. The Lord chose to call two of His workers home as the world celebrates His Birth and Resurrection.[310662.ftw]
