LOWELL -- Ida Golda Kehl, 90, of 194 Third St., died at 7:15 a.m. Sunday (Aug. 19, 2001) at her home after an extended illness.
She was born April 14, 1911, in Noble County to Charles and Elizabeth Holiday Burkhart. She lived in Lowell since 1979, moving there from Lower Salem. She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in Harriettsville and had been faithfully attending St. John's Evangelical Church in Lowell. She was a 50-year member of Order of Eastern Star Masterton Lodge 584 in Lebanon and Zion Women's Club. She was a past member of Elk Grange.
In 1965, she was honored by Ohio Gov. James Rhodes for submitting the winning slogan for the Highway Safety Department's annual competition. Her slogan, "Alert Today -- Alive Tomorrow," was chosen from among 2,500 entries. Along with the recognition, she was given Ohio license plate No. 1 in 1965, an honor that she always remembered.
She is survived by one daughter, Jean Hockenberry and her husband, Charles F., of Lowell; three sons, Dean Kehl and his wife, Helen, of Whipple, and Thurman Kehl and his wife, Darlene, and Jim Kehl and his wife, Rella, all of Columbus; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Von Martin Kehl, who died Nov. 7, 1990. They were married June 21, 1933. Also preceding her in death were her parents; three brothers, William, Preston and Jack Burkhart; and four sisters, Mary Martin, Bessie Fliehman, Martha Hockenberry and Verna Klemn.
Services are at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Lowell Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home with Pastors Gale Lauderman and William Knowles officiating. Burial is in Zion Cemetery. Friends may call 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Eastern Star services are at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
