Wilmer grew up on the family farm and attended the Prairie Park country school and high school in Plevna where he graduated. Following graduation, Wilmer worked on the family farm. Wilmer met Irene Feiock and the two were married on May 12, 1946 at First Baptist Church in Plevna. To this union Wilmer and Irene were blessed with three children, Peggy, Colleen and Keith.
Following their marriage, Wilmer worked on several farms in the Plevna area. Eventually Wilmer and Irene moved into Plevna. In Plevna, Wilmer worked at the Hepperle Station.
